Basically it seems that the problems are confined right now, to the Noth and a little East. I'm in Colombo getting my visa done as I write, and if it wasn't for the fact that I saw it on the news headlines yesterday, I wouldn't have known about the bombs. Up to you, whatever you do, but it may be just a little more expensive to go to China rather than SL. It's true that the peace talks have dimmed a little over the past few days and that 2 British tourists were injured a week ago, but we seem to have problems wherever we go in this troubled world now and I'm taking the chance here. Good luck!

If you are in the south of India then Sri lanka is your best option. You can fly return from Bangalore for about 12,000 Rs. The cheapest and best accomodation in Colombo is the YMCA. Well it's the cheapest but maybe not the best! It's about 350 Sri Lankan Rs. It will take you a minimum of five days to get your visa renewed. Last time it took me ten days!! Before the tsunami you could re-new your visa in one day but now I think they are keen to keep travellers in the country for a little longer. Another option in Sri Lanka is to go to Kandy. It's more relaxed than Colombo and also cooler at this time of year and again it will take you about five days for you visa. As for the troubles in Sri lanka I would not worry, these days there is trouble nearly everywhere you go. I feel safer in Sri Lanka than I do walking the streets of London. Good luck and happy journey.

I'm in Colombo at the moment and didn't even know there had been any bombs! Should have realised when a guy in uniform and moustache shouted "Hello" and waved from behind his sandbags

For details of my own experience going through the visa process here, see www.indiamike.com/india/showthread.php?p=207585

Thailand might be a better option if you don't mind squandering the extra aviation fuel. The Chennai/Colombo route is still relatively expensive (still dominated by Indian and Sri Lanka Airlines) and accomodation is mostly USD 50+ (plus 10% tax, maybe plus more tax) with relatively few guest houses and those more expensive than India and Thailand.

thanks...

ok thanks for the info..... next question.... will they renew a visa while another is still valid? I have found a cheap flight to thailand, fancy a bit of beach life.... for a week or two, but its due when my indian visa is still valid, so will they renew, or do i have to wait till it expires?
thanks for the help so far....

This topic comes up a lot. First, your visa is not being renwed, it's being replaced (tourist visas are non-renewable, which it says in the fine print on your visa). Don't ask for a renewal, as the bureaucrats will tell you they can't renew your visa, which will leave you feeling confused.

When you show up at the consualte, you fill out the paperwork for a brand new visa. They cancel the old one when they affix the new one. Good luck.
