Smile visa issue in new passport

Dear all,

One month back I had applied for a change of address in my passport and recently I received the new passport. The new passport has all entries correct except the valid USA visa which I had in my old passport. This has not been transferred to my new passport. How should I deal with this issue?

Also they have returned back the old passport stamping as "cancelled". Do I have to carry both passports when i visit USA? I would highly appreciate feedback from people who would have had similar issue.

Thanks.

I have seen people carrying 6-7 passports. You are afraid with just two of them

I understand that the US Embassy are prepared, for a fee of course, to transfer a visa to a new passport.

According to an article that I read here recently, and quoted for a similar question from another member, they will not transfer the visa: if you want one in your new passport, you have to go through the application (and paying) process all over again. If I remember correctly.

I would rather carry the old passport rather than go through the entire process once again.......unless it is all smooth and easy nowadays...and no queues.

I KNEW I'd seen clear and comprehensive details of how have the visa transferred to a new passport, I even checked the site again to be sure.

Except... I was confused, that's for Indian visas in the US of course.

Oops, sorry about that walkinclouds!

(adding for completeness)

... and visas would not be transferred by the passport issuer anyway, any more than the country that issued a visa would have any authority to tamper with your passport. India is not going to touch a US visa, any more than US would touch an Indian one.

If in the process of canceling your old passport, when they clipped the corners of the passport the visa page was damaged, then that visa is no longer valid and cannot be used for travel to the U.S.

If not, then as nycank said, you're good to go. Just carry old and new passports with you. I had to do this many years ago so I know US visas are not transferable.

You will be allowed entry into the U.S. if a) the old passport is from the same country as the new passport was, and b) your travel conforms to the original visa i.e. if old one was tourist, and you're now going there as a student, you would have to obtain a new/correct student visa.
