Kiramakora, I am not sure whether there is a difference between holders of a residence permit of Schengen-countries or simple Schengen visas. Before I post wrong infos here, I'll try to figure it out...

Kiramakora is right. I had to apply for a Swiss visa right in the Zurich airport for I thought my Schengen visa will cover Swiss-land. They gave me one but for exactly the length of time I was to be in Zurich, starting right then in the airport.

Later when I had residence permit for Holland and had to go to Zurich again, I didnt need a Swiss visa, said the Swiss embassy.

Here's what the Swiss Consulate website says (extract):

Visa for people living in India

Switzerland is not part of the SCHENGEN-Union.

No Visa is Required for Indian nationals holding:
a) a valid permanent residence permit (recognised by the Federal Office of Migration see list) of an EU or an EFTA country.
b) a valid US green card
c) valid permanent residence permit of Canada, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and the stay does not exceed 3 months and the purpose of travel is: Tourism, Visit or Business

However, just having a valid Schengen visa does not exempt you from getting a separate Swiss visa.
This is correct. I was in CH and Germany last year and needed visas for both. Bloody Schengeners even tell u that if u intend to travel outside Schengen in addition to inside, then get the non-Schengen visa before u apply for Schengen!

kiramakora, you are right.

For Indian citizens, visa free travel to Switzerland is only possible if you have a valid permanent residence certificate of an EU/EFTA country, Andorra, Canada, Monaco, San Marino or USA plus additional conditions. Please check them at:

For more infos on Switzerland inquire at the Swiss representations in India:
