Visa for Leh
I was in the Indian Embassy in London a couple of days ago sorting out my visa and the woman behind the counter informed me that i would require a seperate visa if i wish to travel to Leh and that this visa can only be gotten from Delhi and could take some time to process. I had not heard anything about this previously and was wondering if anyone might enlighten me on the subject. Is there a check point or can i just go regardless of not having the correct paperwork?
Thanxs Soup |

you just need an visa for india. not a seperate one..
if you travel to some places outside leh such as pangong tso, you will need an inner line permit which you can get at various places. |

Visiting Ladakh
Hi,
Catch a Bus or Jeep from Manali and reach Leh. Otherwise fly in from Delhi, Chandigarh or Sirinagar. There obtain Inner Line permit if visiting any area falling in Inner line. Once you reach Leh the capital of Ladakh you will get enough info. Don't worry. Visit Ladakh and enjoy. VSK |

Here's a tip. I used to be told this misinformation about Leh sometimes when I would apply at the Indian Consulate in New York. I found that if the person behind the desk remained convinced that a special permit was required to go to Leh, I would say "Well, okay, I've changed my itinerary and have decided to go to India but not Leh. If I decide to go there after all, I'll get the necessary permits in Delhi."
This worked fine, and they gave me regular visas, sternly pointing out the line that says the visa is not valid for restricted areas. Which is fine bc Leh is NOT a restricted area, and as Sunil and Rahul correctly point out, permits for the restricted areas in remote parts of Ladakh are issued by the DC's office in Leh. That process takes only a day or two in Leh. |
