Visa extension

Hi all,

Does anyone know if it's possible to get an extension on our 6 month tourist visas whilst we are in India?

Between us we have one French and two English passports and we are planning on travelling round India for nearly seven months.

Is it possible/difficult to get an extension whilst we are in India? Would we be better advised to branch off into a near-by country to renew our visas?

Any advice very gratefully received.

Thanks,

GP&D

No. You do need to go out before 180 days expire. Nepal and/or Sri Lanka are the options.

Thumbs down oh dear

There really is no need to be rude. If you don't like a query, ignore it. It's not as if it was directed at you personally.

GP&D, there is a confusion because you'll seem to have visited India in the past, and there is also a sense that some questions you have asked seem to be quite obvious to a second timer

Enjoy India, dont over plan/over book. just curious, do schools in UK allow a long break to a 9 yr old ? or is she being home schooled ?

I've only known of this under exigent circumstances e.g. medical emergency that prevents travel.

Yes. But one point - it's not renewal of visa, you'll be applying for a new one because your old 6-mo one will have expired.

Check the neighboring countries visa run threads here on IM for people's experiences e.g. in the Bangkok one, some reported getting 3 mo visas, not 6 month. Mileage varies quite a bit as you'll see from those threads. Plan on 5 business days between application and having to return for visa stamp.

Good luck, and do report back if you learn anything about renewal/visa run that'll help other travelers.

nycank, that wasn't meant for you, but for Nick-H and his oddly offended tone of voice.

You're right, I have been to India before, but only for short stays, so I'm still trying to get my head round all the issues.

As for our daughter, she isn't in a critical year vis-a-vis schooling, so as she is doing well in her education, we feel we can carry her through in the core subjects of English and Maths.

And apart from that, we are pretty sure she'll learn more about life, the world, and people whilst travelling round a country like India than she would at school here.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Thanks namaste_cat, good points.

We'll most likely be in Sri Lanka or Thailand, so I'll check the ins and outs of getting new visas in either of those two countries.

Thanks again. I've only just discovered this site and I must say it's very impressive thanks to all the helpful people on here.

And some report getting none. Try it by all means; but keep in mind it doesn't seem to be anything that can be counted on anymore.

In this same Visa (sub-) forum you're in, you'll find some threads on the countries at hand as "sticky" threads; threads "stuck" on top of a forum so they'll always remain there. Some of them will be quite lengthy, but you could read their last bunch of pages for an idea of latest developments, and keep an eye on posting dates. They are namely:

Applying for an Indian tourist visa in Bangkok
Applying for an Indian tourist visa in Turkey (with a US passport)
My stay in Kathmandu for Visa 25.12.06 - 3.12.06
Applying for another Indian tourist visa in Colombo, Sri Lanka

GP&D... sorry... nothing personal, and no intention to offend, in token of which I have deleted my previous two posts. It is a FAQ, the answer to which is easily found here and elsewhere. I hope and trust you will stay with us long enough to understand a slightly impatient response to that, but still regret having offended you
