Hi travelers,
Got a query which I'm hoping someone will be able to answer for me. Could someone who has successfully received a visa extension of some kind please give me an overview on what happened and where. We went to Delhi Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) (took entire day) and applied for 3 month extension on our 3 mth entry visa. We were interviewed and OKed, then given an envelope to take to our local Foreigner's Registration Office (F.R.O.) in Jammu J&K. They did all their CID checking etc. and they said no worries, then faxed a favorable report to Delhi MHA saying they would hear back from Delhi after which they could endorse our passports (Australian BTW) with our visa extension. Now they say they're not too sure whether that is the case or whether we need to go to Delhi for passports stamping. We have less than two weeks left even though we started this after one week in India. Please let me know if you have gone through this process - what is supposed to happen? Particularly in relation to that last step - where does it occur. From what I saw of Delhi MHA they didn't seem to stamping any passports at all, just taking apps and sending people off to various FRO's after approval. Hope to hear from someone soon, yours sincerely, Dain |

Please explain more accurately. What kind of visa is it? How did you obtain that visa? An entry visa of 3 months?? Better to go to kathmandu and get a new visa over there I would suggest.
But explain more about the visa and people will give you some good advise. |

Quite.... a Type-X visa is usually referred to as an 'entry' visa (no idea why). They are usually issued for one year or more.
What is the purpose of your visit to India? Are you working here? There is normally no permitted extension to a tourist visa.

applied for extension at MEA, got the sealed envelope, took that to the local FRO, filled some form, handed over some documents, went through a short interview with the top guy over there...and that was it, I was asked to come back to the FRO office for the extension after a while (don't remember how many days), which I did. They gave me a paper (Stay Visa, I think) and a bigger stamp on my passport. In between I also got a visit from an FRO guy at home, btw, and was asked a lot of questions and gave more xerox copies of the same documents.

HI again travelers,
I know there are details missing from my 'visa extension' query thread above. But I have done this to keep things simple. I really am after anyone's personal experience of the process to assure myself that the FRO is the office which does the actual issuing of the stamp/visa extension itself. 'icetea''s reply was exactly what I was hoping for; a simple, to the point report of the main steps which he experienced. Please can I have some more of those kind of replies. Just for interest sake - I have been getting 6mth tourist visas for India since 1999, alternately from Australia then Sri Lanka the other 6mths (both Kandy and Colombo). For the first time ever they queried my visa app. at Colombo (in March), because I'd put Computer Analyst for occupation (which I'd always done) and because of the amount of Indian visas, the guy at the very front table, in foyer, who was checking everything said NO (he thought I must be working there). Then when I explained to someone behind counter that I am on an Australian pension and don't need to work in India and would never do such a thing, they gave me 3mth Entry visa (type-X) and told me to get extension in Delhi. I have checked this visa type thoroughly on internet and looks like it is a loosely defined type. But in Delhi they were sure that Lanka shouldn't have given it to me as I am not an Indian national but said they'd give me the extended 3mths as a tourist visa. As I said, please let me know where you got your visa extension issued. Thanks, Dain |
