Visa Cancellation (voluntary)
Visa Cancellation (voluntary)
I know most in this forum are looking at visa-granting or visa-renewal, but does anyone know the process for cancelling a visa? If a letter has to be given, where does it go (FRRO? Airport?)?
I tried to find this online at one of the police sites but that type of info wasn't there.

You mean you're not going to use it and want to get a refund? I don't know if this is possible at all. Never heard of it.
Sorry. Maybe someone else will have more positive news for you. A visa to which country are you talking about anyway? It might work differently per country. I'd give the people (embassy?) who granted you the visa a phone call.
As for the cancellation part as such, as far as I know you just don't use it, no problem

Person has an employment visa (for India) and has quit the (Indian) company. Wants to cancel the employment visa (no idea why this is very important but that is the request)---so thought I'd ask here how to go about doing that.
I'd heard you can just turn over some paperwork at the airport(?) but that seems inefficient and not too reliable, either.

Hm yes. So I assume this person wants to stay a little longer?
There may be subtle approaches, but all I've ever heard is technically purpose of visa cannot normally be changed. And the employment visa is strictly bound to your employment with that employer. So if that is terminated, off you go I guess.
I imagine so long as no one cries wolf about it, you could hang on to your existing employment visa for a while. I wouldn't overstretch it, and overstaying or abusing your visa in India (like most anywhere else I imagine) isn't said to be peanuts. Penalties may be harsh, including, but far from limited to, never being allowed to return again.
But again, what do I know, this is just what I hear, so hopefully some expert will be in with a bright idea. What you heard about going through some paperwork may very well be true, I just wouldn't know.

Hi I know this is an old post but does anyone have any answers to this? My employment visa is valid till July 09 but I'll be terminating my employment contract at the end of April 09, and I would like to travel around a bit in May and June.
I'm tempted just to try and get away with it and see what happens, but my company are not too happy about it.
Should I just pop over to Nepal and get a tourist visa? That said, it is still easy to do that in Nepal? I haven't done it in years.
Thanks

I am not too familiar with this process, what paperwork does your company have to file stating that you your contract is terminated in 04/09 instead of 07/09 ?What reason did your company give for agreeing ? and what are the symptoms of their unhappiness ?
Hey thanks for the reply. They have my resignation letter which terminates the contract in April 09. The company just don't want to be responsible for my visa while I am not employed by them, which I can understand. So I need some proper information to give em.

overheard someone trying this at MHA Jaisalmer House - he had kids in school and a flat on lease and had been made redundant. They told him his visa 'expired' with his job and gave him a hard time. He was desperate and asked to see a senior officer, but I don't know if he got anywhere.

I only know that when applying for a new visa, people have reported that the Indian embassy cancels any other current Indian visa in your passport at the same time. ______________________________ ______________________________ _________________

There's this thread. My company had the same concern about responsibility given that I no longer worked there, and also gave the FRRO a letter stating end of my employment. In my case the Bangalore FRRO was OK with my staying, which turned out to be another 60 days.
Switching Companies - Work Visa
I agree with Nick that it's probably luck of the draw on the official you're dealing with. There was no stamp or notation on my visa associated with the end of employment, nor were there any issues when I finally departed two months later.

For that matter I made another visit to India a few months later on the same visa and had no issues. The dates were still valid, and I didn't work, of course...
