Visa Application process (from Australia)
I live in Brisbane - and went to the VFS office here. To my surprise - the functionaries therein were helpful and positive.
So - my advice - go to your local VFS office to submit your application. My experience was that some immersion in the iconaclastic Australian society softens the usually hard-core Indian bureaucrats!
They can function as helpful humans!
Good Luck!

Thanks, Vandy. Appreciated.

The idea that seeing the world means going from place to place to look at obvious things is an illusion natural to dull minds.
obione, I think venturing in to my local VFS office is a good idea.
Thanks

+1 to the Sydney VFS Centre, services have improved dramatically in terms of service delivery standards, customer service (very friendly & polite staff) I applied for my PIO (Person of Indian Origin) card (15 years multiple entry visa into India) in mid January (VFS website states 8 weeks clearance/processing time)
I had my PIO Card posted back in 14 business days.....

I did mine at Clarence street. I had to wait about 1hr to lodge it and then only about 20 mins to pick it up 5 workng days later. There were no hassles at all. Easy.
Don't waste your money on couriers, travel agents, etc, just do it there. They have a photo booth and photocopier so if you need them you can get the pics/copies there. Double plus EASY!!

Using indian visa online
I've been told applying online for an Indian Tourist visa can be complicated and it's proving to be true. I'm using the website flight centre recommended - Toll Visa Direct. And have come to the part where you have to go to the Online Indian Visa Form. You get a Temp application ID #... so far nothings loading or working past page one or two. And if I save to continue later I am unable to use the ID number to retrieve the prior entries data. Is this normal??? Am I doing something wrong??
Your help would be appreciated!

The worst visa process ever
I am disgusted with the visa application process in Australia
This is what happened to me.
Applied June 2010 for tourist visa: forms were sent back because I didnt have form N. I came to Australia as a baby (40 years ago by the way) on my mothers passport, became a Aus citizen in 1976- they wanted me to renounce my Indian citizenship! despite having 3 previous tourist visas in my passport. Decided not to go to India on that trip because I needed to get a Bangladesh visa as well and there was no time (The visa for Bangas was processed in 3 days).
Applied in July 2012 for conference visa: forms were sent back because I didnt have a letter from the Minister saying that the conference was approved and could go ahead at that venue. Missed the conference.
Applied Nov 2012 for a conference visa: forms are being sent back DESPITE having letters from absolutely everyone I can find about the conference, minister, police etc, form renouncing my citizenship (very gladly), getting my mother to sign a document saying she has lost her passport. STILL waiting (4 days now) for my passport to arrive even after paying for their "courier service" -I think maybe the courier has gone for holiday on the way.
My advice- skip India completely- not worth it- go to Bangladesh instead.

Firstly, I don't think we should get antsy over what is, so far, a one post wonder.Secondly, I think the OP needs to take some responsibility.
Notwithstanding a lack of information in the post; if the conference was organised by Government or by an NGO, the VFS website is crystal clear about the requirements.

They even include a download of the form N on the conference visa web page:
