Imer's I need immediate information on behalf of my mother visiting India.
We were told that even when that a 5-year visa, or with PIO or dual citizenship, if one is ever granted, the maximum stay on any one visit is 6 months. Is this true? Anyboidy knows the length of stay for any of these categories?

Yes, it is true.
But... PIO card holders get an exemption from the requirement of registration if stay in India does not exceed 6 months. Should the continuous stay exceed six months, registration will be required within 30 days of the expiry of six months with the concerned Foreigners Registration Officer. Registration with Foreigners Registration Office (FRO)/ Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) Persons of Indian origin holding multiple entry X-visas, visiting India to meet relatives or for social purposes, are required to register with the FRO/FRRO within 14 days of first arrival only if they intend to stay continuously for more than six months. This registration is required during the first visit after the visa is issued. Subsequent travels using the same visa do not require registration. Children below the age of 16 years are exempt from this requirement. All other visitors to India, including those of Indian origin, holding any other category of visa valid for more than six months should register with the FRO/FRRO within 14 days of arrival in India. Persons holding long-term visas (having validity exceeding six months) are normally not expected to stay in India more than six months during each visit.

Thanks John for your quick and helpful resposne. Does this apply to a dual citizen of India? If it also does that does restrict a citizen of India (dual be it).

John, according to the India Immigration site Here
Quote:
There is a requirement to register if staying longer than six months PIO card isi valid for 15 years and, subject to the registration requirement II haven't seen anything that implies that a PIO cardholder might not spend their 15 years in India without leaving. The above site gives full details, along with regulations for visa extension, conversion and so on.
