US Visa Freakout

Hello,

I'm leaving for India in a month and I am applying for my visa by mail (using https://www.indian-visa.com/homepage). I sent off my application yesterday but didn't include my passport - for one reason or another I didn't think to include it. Was I supposed to? It seems like they would have mentioned it, on the website, right? Anyway, I'm freaking out a little bit now, and looking to make sure I haven't screwed up. thoughts?

Mod note : Please donot start more than one thread about the same topic. It will not get you helpful responses.

I believe you need to include your passport, because they print your visa inside. Here in Portugal the Indian consulate website give no indication whatsoever of the proceedures involved in procuring a visa from them, very proffesional eh?

Hmmmm... wish I could say that I never did anything really silly, or that I never failed to notice the obvious. I'd be lying. But this was a bit silly.

I'd expect that they'd just return your application --- but one of your countrymen, with experience of Travisa might know their ways. Good luck!

Do let us know how you get on sorting it out: I bet you are not the only person to make that mistake... your answers will help others.

Yeah, just got on the travisa website and it turns out I should've sent my passport in. It was an easy mistake to make, since they really don't mention it at all. Nonetheless, it was pretty dumb. I figured maybe it was a sticker you put in your passport? oh well. I'm going to call them in half an hour, once their office opens, to see if I should send them a new application or just mail them my passport. My hunch is that a new application is better - expecting flexibility and understanding from a bureaucracy would be a terrible mistake.

Yes, you screwed up.

They need the actual passport and they do mention this -- in plain English -- on the website, which lists the items needed for the application as follows - see the second item:

Application: Complete the online India Visa Application. After the application has been completed, you must print and sign the application.

Passport: Passport must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of application with at least two blank visa pages. Last 2 amendment pages are not acceptable. Must be the actual passport not a copy because your visa will be stamped in the actual passport.

Photographs: Photographs: 2 latest identical passport size photographs (black/white or color) depicting front pose against light background on photographic paper.

Proof of Address: Applicants must submit a photocopy with proof of residence/address that matches the address on the visa application exactly. Photocopy of state issued ID (Driver License or ID), or major utility bill (Water, Gas, Electric, Sewage) must be submitted.

Actually, they do expressly state on the website that you have to send the original passport with the application. As I pointed out in response to one of your other versions of this message, the website lists what must be included with the application as follows - note the second item:

"Application: Complete the online India Visa Application. After the application has been completed, you must print and sign the application.

Passport: Passport must have a minimum validity of six months from the date of application with at least two blank visa pages. Last 2 amendment pages are not acceptable. Must be the actual passport not a copy because your visa will be stamped in the actual passport.

Proof of Address: Applicants must submit a photocopy with proof of residence/address that matches the address on the visa application exactly. Photocopy of state issued ID (Driver License or ID), or major utility bill (Water, Gas, Electric, Sewage) must be submitted."

By the way, please don't post multiple versions of the same message in different places. It causes confusion, makes it more difficult (not easier) for people to respond to your inquiries, and is against the site's rules -- which you apparently haven't read any more than you read the Travisa website's instructions for applying for a visa, which tell you in plain English that you need to send the original passport. If you're going to expect "flexibility" and "understanding" from the bureaucracy, you have to meet them at least half way, you know.

If they mail out a sticker, who's to say it won't end up astray and on a different person's passport!?
Anyway as you saw on their website, and dzibead posted, it does clearly state -- "Must be the actual passport not a copy because your visa will be stamped in the actual passport."

Heaven knows I've done enough dumb things in my time

Hope you were able to send it in after all, and can get your visa soon.

Call them up, ask them to hold the visa forms and mail them your passport.
