I stayed for 7 months on a stretch on 10yr visa... just had to register at the regional foreigner registration office. But nobody checked the registration document upon exiting India.
NOTE: Had to pay a 300Rs bribe to the officers who handed over the registration document to me.

The good news> We just renewed our US passports, turn around time was ONE WEEK! We sent the 2 together by Express Mail [and insured it for the value of the India Visas which were still valid and the cost of reapplying for same] and we paid an additional $14.85 for Express Mail for return for each of the passports [we we told we had to pay it for each because they might be separated in the processing - they were returned in 2 separate envelopes, but our 2 numbers are consecutive; they obviously were processed together.

On the application form there is a choice "Transfer Tourist Visa"
The websites of the several India Consulates and the Indian Embassy in the US used to say that you could travel with 2 passports. That info is no longer on their websites. However, when we passed through immigration in November, we asked about 2 passports and were told "No Problem". On the other hand, what if...

On the other hand, Travisa obviously would say they "Highly Recommend It" since as the transfer agent, they make $13 for every transfer.

I'm grudgingly applying for them to transfer our visas and am amazed that I have to resubmit a visa application, complete with photos and proof of address.

There is also an interesting, troubling caveat about nonrefundable payments...

Whoever thought that India would outsource a service to a US contractor?

Thank you everyone for your kind responses.

Just returned from a short trip to India. Had no trouble passing through immigration with the expired passport (valid 10 year visa) and the new passport... no questions asked.
