US leads the race for Overseas Citizen of India certificate
Quote:
Read the complete story here at Times of India.......If anybody here (PIO) have not applied for OIC certificate, please do it as there are benefits attached to it. Many people might not be aware of OIC certificate due to poor publicity in overseas-- as quoted in the article.
Not exactly a race, as the point of the article is that take-up has been fairly low!
I would guess (not being a statics person, in fact being more of an innumerate person
) that the USA has more people of Indian origin than any other major country. It's big and popular!
Crazy, really... they say they've publicised it well in India but not abroad. Isn't that rather missing the point?
Certainly several entitled people have learnt of its existence here on IM! And may have been diverted from applying for PIO.
If one is entitled, then the advantages over PIO are small, but significant --- lifetime validity probably being the main one.
Whilst the scheme is there to enable members of the Indian diaspora to feel more connected to their mother country, there are also, undoubtedly, many members of that diaspora that are perfectly happy to have left India behind. Of course, we are unlikely to be hearing from them on our Indiaphile site.
