unused Indian tourist visa, can i change it for a new one?

I was far too organised, or ironically, so unorganised, that i have a 6 month tourist visa which i haven't used yet, that expires in october, i haven't entered the country and would like a new one so i can be there longer... is it possible to change visas if you haven't entered the country on it???

There's no changing visas -- you just get a new one. It doesn't matter whether or not you used the old one. Just apply for a new one closer to the time of your trip.

In your case it is easy, just ask for them to cancel your visa and apply for a new one, because you haven't used it.

Just to clarify one point for other readers who may be in a slightly different position....

It is not so easy for anyone who is within the period of being out of India for 2 months, they would have wait until the end of the 2 month period before the HCI would consider canceling the current visa and issuing a new one.

To my best knowledge, it's not even a matter of any "canceling" so much: Like Merchant said, the new visa will just simply overrule the previous one.

So in other words, to my best knowledge again, you don't need nor want to approach them about any cancellation of visa (which could no doubt cause confusion, since that just isn't the terminology. Besides, what would they do, rip out that page from your passport? They might stamp a giant red X on it or so, that I don't know): What you want is to apply for a new visa. If granted, it will render the previous and existing one null and void.
