Used to be at the discretion of the immigration official earlier, along with discretionary stupid questions.
Its for tuberculosis.

yes. chest X ray is rquired.
you go to the immigration counter. they see that you have work permit of more than 6 months they send you to a medical office. the people there ask you if you have brought your chest x-ray. if you have brought it, you submit it, you fill a form, get a stamp and come back to a special immegration counter, get stamp in passport and go out for baggage claim. If you donot have the chest x-ray then you have to wait in that medical office and get it done. One of my workmates didnot know abt this (though our office sends us docs which clearly emphasizes this requirement) and he had a long wait. |

ok...i guess this is the final schedule..hopefully it shoudl work out...
currently waiting for my work permit to come here by courier. it should be here in chennai before friday. on friday night, leave for delhi. on sat morning leave for varanasi. sat n sun are holidays. on monday, get marriage certificate made in varanasi. tuesday is a holiday, return to delhi. on wed morning, apply for a visa (for me) + dependent visa (for spouse) in the british embassy in new delhi. we should get it by friday evening....this is a safe estimate. last time in chennai, i got it in 1 day. then on sat/sun, leave for UK.

Fair enough if you are working here, I suppose. (I suppose that they will accept a TB (BCG) vaccination certificate instead of the X-Ray)

Not an expert, but I would think that at the airport, it is easier to take an xray and confirm almost immediately?

no steambuff.....they donot accept any vaccination certificate. they will ask explicitly for the x-ray. Anyway, getting an x-ray done in India is no great problem. You can get it done in 1 day for around 150 rs in any halfway decent dianostic clinic.
Almoraboy can get it done in varanasi or delhi. Almoraboy, I think you have to pay draft for visa fees (iam not very sure about these kind of things as all arranged by company in my case). There seems to ba a lot of holidays in your schedule, so please be careful that you have time to get the DD. in case I remember anything else which I think will be useful for you, i will add to this thread. |

OK Nayan.
Quote from UK Immigration Web Site Because you may be able to obtain free medical treatment from the National Health Service if you are in the UK on a work permit of greater than six months duration, visa applications for longer than six months will often be subject to your passing a medical examination. While visas for under six months can sometimes be issued within 24 or 48 hours, it will usually take at least ten working days to process a visa for more than six months. This would imply that:- a/ The Medical has to be done prior to getting the Visa. b/ Is only needed for work-permits of 6 months or greater. |

Captain, I think a lot of people donot know abt this chest x-ray regulation. so that medical office has to take X-ray of lot of people. So theres a big queue.
if you have carried your x-ray with you in your cabin baggage then you just have to hand it over and the whole thing is done in 2-3mins. otherwise you have to wait for a minimum of 1 hour.It happened to my colleague. I am sure no one would wish to wait for 1 hr needlessly after a long haul fight. |

steambuff,
1. No medical has to be done prior to visa. 2. yes,I am speaking of work permits of more than 6 months.(as indicated in one of my earlier posts) My workmates and I have to frequently fly to UK on longterm(more than 6 months)WPs. So i am certain about the above points. As my company takes care of the documentation, fees etc so I am not sure abt the fee amount or who its paid to. |

nayan, sorry, was replying to steambuff's question... I meant it would be easier for the authorities in UK.

I wonder how they know it's your xray?
![]() "Gosh! I didn't recognise you with your flesh on..." Marriage registration/certificate... We didn't get ours on same day. I think we had to go back to the office a week later. Might be different if your office is more modern and computerised....
