Travelling with UNCANCELLED valid passport during passport reissue period

Hello,
I have submitted an application for re-issue of my passport which is due to expire in Feb 2013 at the Passport Seva Kendra, Pune.The existing passport has not been stamped as "Cancelled".
The application status indicated that Police verification has been initiated.
My question here is to know if I can travel with my existing passport (which does not indicate Cancelled) before I get the new passport?

You can travel with the old passport till its expiry or issue of new passport whichever is earlier.

If you have currently valid Visas on the old one, then you need to carry both old and new passports, once issued.

I am still waiting to get my new passport.
The existing one is not yet cancelled and expires in Feb 2013. So can I travel in September 2012 to the US with my existing passport?I heard, it needs to have atleast 6 months of validity to travel to US. Is that correct?
I have a valid US visa till 2018.

Does the process of passport re-issue change from passport office to passport office?
Is there a mandate on the passport office to process a normal passport re-issue application within a certain number of days?

I think you are right. However how they treat it when you intend to stay longer than your passport validity, I am not sure.

The process now is pretty standard except some minor adjustments. There are many such SOP's even in Govt departments, but how many govt departments actually follow it.

Are you sure ? I think 6 month validity is when you apply for visa. Not while entering the US.

What I meant is how the CBP decide on the length of stay if passport is valid for 6 months and the person intends to stay longer?

I don't think s23srinivas is going for a long period, because on this passport he can not. And after coming back from his trip he can give it for new passport.

The thumb rule for persons entering in a B1/B2 non immigrant to the US is codified as more out than in. Just because you ask at the border that you'd like to stay for >6 months, it is the discretion of the person at the immigrations to decide.
