Tourist visa -> Employment Visa

Alright, here goes...

I have some extended family (husband's sister is marrying a guy from Goa) in India and would like to spend a couple months touring and visiting (and learning Hindi not-from-a-book) before taking a volunteer placement. The volunteer folks just want to know when we'll show up and will arrange visas for then... would it be possible to get tourist visas and not leave the country prior to switching to employment visas??

probably no one here can answer this definitively as the circumstances fairly unusual -- perhaps the volunteer organization can get your visa to you early enough to cover your travels as well. If the employment visa is for 6 months (like your tourist visa), potentially there could be a problem just switching visas at an immigration office after you have been in the country a while, but I really don't know. You should probably contact the Indian Consulate in Toronto and see what they suggest, but perhaps the volunteer outfit has dealt with this issue before and would be a better first step before plunging into voice-mail hell at the consulate.
