Wow! I got my 10 year for $150. Now I see I would have to tack on another 30 beans. I guess the good thing is that whereas the Indian government takes steps to insure undesirables can't get in (in theory), and don't care how long you wait in line, a private company makes its money issuing visas, and it is in their interest to get as many out as quickly as possible. I must say, though, I got my 10 year back literally days after I sent in for it.

there have been a series of postal strikes in uk this summer/autumn - the suspension of postal applications is i think a sensible response by hci london as you don't want your passport/visa application stuck in a postal sorting office for a week. this has created the additional queuing.

Outsourcing is going to happen worldwide in Indian missions! This is an Indian Government decision! The USA has outsourced visa processing from 1st October 2007 to Travisa Inc

This makes me wonder what the situation might be for those of you planning on getting new visas in Kathmandu or Columbo...

Yes....more difficult as the agent will not want to get a visa for a non resident unless they have lived in that country for a year or so!

I read something somewhere that indicated 'visa runs' will not be entertained!

Agents don't make Decisions

Or not the way it works with British visas here in Chennai.

They meet the applicant, check the form, check the supporting documents, take the fee including their cut. Why the hell should we pay them, eh? we didn't decide to outsource.

They then place the whole bundle in a sealed envelope and it is shipped to the British High Commission, where British visa officials examine, decide, and ship the passport back again, with, or without visa.

I'm sure that all visas other than tourist visas must be processed this way.

As the Indian tourist visa is no more (in most cases) than a rubber-stamp tax on travel, they may not follow this model for clear-cut cases. If they do, then places like London, where it is now possible to get a visa in two hours will probably start taking 24.

The following statement from the Ambassador expains it. San Fransisco is also the same.

"For the very reasonable cost of..."

Bloody cheek... not only do they outsource, they get the applicants to pay for the cost!

And the visa fee is just a tax on travel to begin with .

£10 visa charge

Hi there Patti123,

I found the following link for a travel agents in Doncaster - ony charge £10 for visa

http://www.darjeelingtour.co.uk/

We are going to use tham and some people I work with using them also - saves having to make a special trip to either London or Manchester and the thought that after waiting in line might still not get one.

Hope this helps

Chez & Dave
