Ten year visa
I understand citizens of the United States are able to apply for a ten year visa due to a bilateral agreement. Could anyone please explain why that is the case and what this agreement includes?
Thank you, diplomacy |

All I know is that we also get charged quite a few more rupees than any other nationality. It's about $15 US more for us, whatever the length of the visa.
Perhaps one of the rare cases in which we actually get what we pay for?

I didn't think this topic would elicit such funny responses!I have no idea why we U.S. citizens get to buy 10 yr. visas (which cost the same as 5 yr. visas, [$150 ] so why would you get a 5 yr.?). I only know I have one because I can't resist a good deal I somehow think the prices will just keep going up and I'm hoping I've saved a few rupees. Probably that won't work, they'll tack on an extra fee![]() |

I do know that Indians can get a 10 year visa to the States also.
Though it's probably not as easy to obtain. |

It sounds to me like some reciprocal agreement betweeen the two countries - length of visa etc. varies from country to country. It may have changed recently but I know it was very difficult to get even a 5 years visa in Australia and to get Mr K a visa for a week visit to Australia impossible - whereas NZ seems to enjoy 'better relations' with India and these things were very simple and hassle free there. You would think there was a standard rule for visas for all countries wouldn't you? But this is diplomacy for you I think! I may be entirely wrong with this theory... would be interested to hear views from others.

An Indian can get (well, apply for) a visa up to 2 years to visit UK. We are stuck with 6 months to visit India. Reciprocity is exagerated!

The visa can be transferred to your new passport. I think you just send the old and new passports to the nearest consulate and they do it. Procedural details are probably on the consular website.

My passport had to be renewed 1 year before my Visa expired 2 years back. I had to renew visa at same time, they wouldn't transfer it and the same thing happened to a friend of mine who is a permanent resident in Pushkar. This was in New Zealand. Again, different arrangements for different countries???

From the UK Indian High Commission Site:-
Transfer of Visa Fee £4.00, this is for transfer of five-year visa issued by this mission or other missions in UK, from an expired passport to a new passport. Both the expired and new passports have to be submitted in original along with a separate application form. 5 Year visa's are "Entry" and "Long Term" Visa's which are only issued to people of Indian Origin. |

First, I was wrong. There doesn't appear to be a 5 yr. visa for a US "nationals". It's 6 mo. 1 yr. or 10 year. Of course, you can't stay for 10 years, you can only stay for 6 months at a time but you can keep going back!
The India Consulate in New York website says: "Visa holders, whose passport has expired and who have obtained new passports can travel to India with both old and new passports so long as the old passport contains valid visas." You can also have it transferred to your new passport for $25 and an additional $20 if you didn't get it in New York. geez. |

Visa terms and fees are reciprocal. Which means that the length of visa granted and the fees charges to US citizens would reflect what US charges for Indian citizens.
