Taking travellers cheques.... Im A Scottish 20 yr old going to india in october. I intend going to the more rural parts ie parvati/manali and I have been adding up it will cost me £900 just to get there! thats inc, new passport, shoes, jacket/jumper, innoculations, rucksack, travel insurance, flights..... more than the 700 I bargained for, and as I want to take £1200 ish with me I will need to eat into my bank overdraft. I dont think I can take out money with my card every few weeks for a few month period without any money entering my account, basically i think they will stop my overdraft! To counteract this i thought about taking the £400 overdraft I have out, in cash, before I leave.... Get it transferred into travellers cheques, and get them changed into roupees when in India Is this a viable option? Instead of taking the plastic card for the machines? I am worried it will be very hard to find places to change the travellers cheques in rural india (parvati/manali) or are there such places there? Or is it going to be just as hard to find cash machines with my card As I say id prefer to empty the overdraft before i go, rather than risk the bank shutting it off a few months before I leave India... which is why i now think travellers cheques maybe the best option. What do you's think is the best solution here, given I might have to get this overdraft for the 5-6 month trip I intend to spend there? Please advise me on this! PS. Are boots still charging £2.99 for 10 weeks worth of malaria pills? thanks!!!! kieran

Kia Ora kieran Around the Kullu Valley, no problem changing tc's in Manali, but do not think there is anywhere in the Parvati valley to do it. Although a couple of years since my last visit, so someone probably more up to date information. You can get money out on cash advance from ATM's in most major cities, but very few of the smaller centres. I think Travellers Cheques a good idea to get your overdraft sorted into, and change a 100 quid or so before you head up the parvati to be on the safe side. Keep in mind that you can buy malaria tablets very cheaply in India, and that in October in the Himalaya it is getting fairly cold so you probably wont lay eyes on a mozzie. Good times. dil.

If you've got an agreed overdraft with the bank, then they won't do anything until you go over that limit - they make money from you using your overdraft, so they won't want to stop you using it! Why not give them a ring and see if they'll extend your limit - to give you a bit of breatihng space.

For ATMs try the following links. Check on the back of you debit card to find the network you are part of (CIRRUS and Interac are common). http://www.mastercard.com/us/persona...ons/index.html http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/...SearchPage.jsp
