Student Visa and Work VIsa

Anyone know how you can go about getting both of these together? I would think it makes sense that a student would want to get a job (part-time) at least while studying. Is it done normally? Am I wrong?

A combination of these two factors in a visa is one I'm yet to hear about. Others may have different experiences but I'm of the idea that this is not easily done!!

Foreigners can't get such things in the US.

I don't necessarily mean in one document, I just mean that one can be relied upon in acheiving the other. I just think if someone is going to live there for 2+ years they may want to get a job no?



Sure they can, there is some special thing but there are alot of student visa holders that get paid internships etc otherwise companies sponsor visas and they are able to stay in the country

Those student work-study programs and internships are not "jobs" in the legal, immigration sense of the word. They are part of the university's financial package or an academic component. Students have to be accepted into a program first, then apply for a student visa.

I could be wrong, but I can't imagine scenario in India whereby a foreign student would be allowed to work. India has very few foreign students anyway, no compelling reason to attract more, and no incentive at all to give them a job once they arrive.

Remember, all of this stuff has to do with immigration and so is full of red tape and other bureaucratic disincentives.

In the U.S. you certain CANNOT "rely upon" one to get the other. I've never seen anything that would indicate that India handles this issue differently.

Again, in the U.S. the State Department (which issues visas) does not look at things this way. Permission to enter in order to be a student and permission to enter in order to work fall into completely different visa categories.

As Merchant said, an internship that's part of one's studies is a different matter. And as for staying in the country after one's studies are complete, that's a whole separate visa application process. As far as the U.S. is concerned, getting an H1B employement visa through sponsorship by a company/employer is unrelated to having a student visa. And, again, I've never seen anything to indicate that India handles this issue differently.

I think you need to make an appointment to talk with someone at your nearest India consulate for accurate answers to your questions.
