spouse and student visas for UK

I am planning to get married to a UK permanent resident (Indian citizen) in the end of this year. I am myself an Indian citizen. After marriage, I want to join him in the UK as soon as possible. I am also planning to apply for a post-doctoral study program in some of the UK universities. I have been told that if I get admission in the post-doc, I can apply for a student visa.
I want to know which of the two takes less time to get - a spouse visa or a student visa? I have already visited the UK visa website and they give a lot of useful details but they do not give how much time it takes to get a visa. Can someone please help me regarding this?

If you are going to marry in the UK, then, as I understand it, you have to have a visa that specifically allows you to marry.

Correct me if I'm wrong; you've been reading the UK site more recently than I have and, as a Brit, I know more about Indian visa stuff than I do about my own country.

No, I am not planning to get married in the UK, I will be getting married in India, to a UK permanent residency holder, who is an Indian citizen. But I will be going to the UK after getting married. I am also applying for post-docs. Assuming I get the post doc, I have a choice of applying for a spouse visa or a student visa. I want to know which one is faster and how much time it takes to get a spouse visa, and a student visa for the UK.

So I answered the worn question; sorry.

And I'm afraid I do not know the answer to the right question.

Well, I'm hoping someone else (maybe someone who's gone through the British visa experience recently) will be able to tell me...
