Single- Multi entry visa Problem!!?

Hi am in Kerala and been in India for 1 month now. I am wanting to go to Thailand but have to return to Mumbai for a flight to Australia. AS i didn't think i would be going to Thailand i only got a single entry visa. Is there a way to change it to Multi entry or will it be a case of getting another visa for a couple of days wait in Mumbai and who knows how long this costs and takes?
Thanks.

No.

You give your location as UK so assuming you're English I am surprised you have a single entry visa. Unless you're of certain heritage such as Pakistani, the standard is multiple entry, and it certainly costs no more than single entry. I guess that if you specifically applied for a single entry visa, they might have given you one. This may sound obvious, but have you checked what visa type you've been given? There are cases where people applying for single entry have been given multiple entry.

Yes. If you leave India after entering on a single entry visa, that's it. You cannot enter India again without applying for a new visa. Depending on how long you were planning on being in Thailand that may be a problem, as there are no guarantees on the timescale of your second Indian visa being granted, or for that matter that you will get one at all. Refusals after a short stay are unlikely though, it's people applying for back to back visas who seem to be having the most trouble.

If you will only be in Mumbai for a day or two, you might qualify for an Indian transit visa, but I have no idea whether that would be any cheaper or quicker to acquire in Thailand than an Indian tourist visa. For details of how long tourist visas are taking to process, which currently seems to be a minimum of five working days, keep an eye on the sticky about it at the top of this forum.

Look up transit visa for the rub on that. It depends on whether you have luggage transferred and maybe how long you will be there..

Question 5 of the VFS FAQ list answers this rather nicely.

5. I will be changing flights/airports in India to travel to my final destination (say Nepal, Thailand etc.) Do I need a visa to change flights/airport terminals?
You need to apply for a transit visa if you are going to change from an international terminal to a domestic terminal of any Indian airport or if you are going to stay in an airport hotel even for a few hours. You don't need a transit visa if you stay in the waiting area reserved for international transit passengers in an Indian airport. Note that you can stay for a maximum period of 72 hours in India on a transit visa. You should have a confirmed air ticket for the onward journey.
