Residential permit/ Income tax clearance
I got a 1 year visa with the six month "get out" stipulation but when I went to the FRO to register they gave me a residential permit till the expiry date of the visa which says "permitted to remian in India till ......" I rechecked if it is fine to stay with it since it has the six month stipulation and was told by the FRO it is fine. Now I hear I must get an Income tax clearance since I have spent over six months on a tourist visa here. Anyone here faced any problems with a similar visa while exiting ? I also hear no one gets asked the IT clearane after all at the airport.

The first time I went to India I got a tax clearance form. It took a whole afternoon and lots of coming and going between different offices...at least they were all in the same building. I was never asked to show the document.
On all my subsequent trips I haven't bothered and have never been hassled for it. It's up to you but I usually have too much last minute shopping to find the time! Annie T |

sometimes
One one instance, after a one year stay, the guy at the airport asked me: "do you have something for me?". I gave him both the tax clearance and registration certificates and he seemed satisfied.
I don't know if he wanted both or would just one suffice.

The RULE says that anyone travelling out of India on a one way ticket needs to get an Income tax clearance certificate if he/she has stayed more then 180 days (yes, there's the fine print.. but this should suffice).
However, this is not something that's rigorously practised. It's the airline's responsibility to collect 1 copy of the ITC and FILE IT!.. So, that should be an indication of how seriously this rule is being implemented. But if you have the time the time I'd recommend you get one. Indian bureaucracy can hit you when you least expect. If you couldn't be bothered, take your chances.. probably no one'll ever ask you... |
