How does this passport cancellation work? Mail the old passport with $20 and the letter, and the passport comes comes back cancelled?? Entry Visas Difficulty
In regards to the new rules for renunciation of Indian passports, they have also created some new rules for Persons of Indian Origins that is giving us significantly difficulty right before departing for our trip to India!! Please help:
My wife is a US born, American citizen. She submitted an expired passport (with current 10 year visitors Visa), marriage certificate, and current passport (with new last name) for transfer of Indian Visa to Travisa.
The application for transfer was denied because they are claiming she is of Indian Origin since her parents were born in India and were previously Indian citizens (naturalized in 1980's) and she needs to apply for a "Entry Visa". HOWEVER, they are asking for copies of her parent's renounced/expired Indian passports. BIGGEST PROBLEM: her parents and grandparents are all deceased and we have no access to their records/passports.
What to do??!!

Withdraw the application to transfer her existing current visa to her new passport. It wasn't necessary to have the visa transferred to her current passport anyway, it would just have saved her from having to carry two passports. Her existing visa is still valid, unless they have already cancelled it.

The culprit is not CGI, it is the TraVisa - They cannot cancel a passport. Travisa is turning out to be absolutists.

Yup. Check the link to the "surrender certificate" for the consulate that falls in your state jurisdiction.
In SF the passport was returned back with the surrender certificate.

did u get ur visa for india or u r still waiting for it.i also had applied for entry visa on june 9th.then they didnt update my status for almost 3 wks.and then i started to email them daily and now last wk they sent me my passport back and they updated my status as visa application is pending and waiting for clearance.they said if they will get clearance they will ask for my passport back.i got my naturalization citizenship in may.and they also returned my indian passport and money order of 20 dollars.so i dont know whts the reason they didnt issue me entry visa.
CGISF.org updated the site and say that cases handled before May 31, 2010 will not receive any refund. It sucks!! My receipt and certificate is dated Jun 1, 2010 and they still charged me $175. I have written a letter to ask for refund of $155.
Indian-origin people in UK are, according to a news report I read a week or so ago, up in arms about all this, and lobbying the High Commission --- who, of course, say that the rules are made in India, and there is nothing they can do about them.
Are the rules still applicable (i.e. $20 fee)? I went to travisa in d.c., and handed over my expired indian passport - got it canceled (stamped Canceled everywhere on the passport), signed a renunciation letter, but don't recall paying any fee for it.
I have relatives, who still have expired passports and wondering if there is a fine for not giving the indian passports up within a "reasonable" time. I heard the latter was rumored to be true.

Om Shanti
As far as I know, it still is. The $20 is for pre-May 2010. Thereafter, it's $175 for all who've given up Indian citizenship.
When did you go to the DC consulate? Was it recently? And did you get the letter the same day? I'm curious because a friend of mine needs to do this, and was wondering if she could turn it in at window service, and get it back the same day.

Hmm... it could be that I seriously don't remember paying $20 when I went to Travisa (downtown in D.C.) - early this year. Yes, I got the passport and the letter the same day. - Did it all at the window service - one day affair (got the visa & the latter)! The fine or rather the penalty I was referring to was regarding not giving them up by a "reasonable amount of time." This, I believe, is regardless of when you were naturalized (i.e. pre/post May 2010). It was just rumored that there would be a penalty/fine for renouncing much later - I could see how this would be very unfair - especially if one isn't checking embassy stipulations on a regular basis.
I don't follow this stuff; maybe somebody will find it more useful
