Help Regarding Passport Error

Hi all,

I have issued passport from Ahemadabad, approx 2 years ago. However there was a mistake in my printed name, which i couldnt rectify since i have moved to Mumbai.

What can i do, since i have filled the form correctly. The problem is if i want to re-issue the certificate from Ahmedabad, i wouldnt be able to show the previous adress proof. Any suggestions

Regards

Reissue Passport after 2 years

Hi,

Is there any way, one can reissue passport after 2 years.
Actually, the name is mis-spelt in my current passport.I need to get it corrected.

Since i dont want any other changes from the original, like change in address etc, do i have to go through all the procedure again, like police verification etc?

Regards

See the link below, under "Change of Name". Not sure this is relevant to you, but

Quote:
In other circumstances for change of name, the applicant (both male and female) should furnish:

(i) Deed poll/sworn affidavit (ANNEXURE ‘E’):

(ii) Paper cuttings of two leading daily newspapers in original (one daily newspaper should be of the area of applicant’s permanent and present address or nearby area).

Why not just phone the passport office and ask them?

Capt... I think that is for change of name as in I used to be known as Mr XYZ and now wish to be known as Mr ABC rather than a mistake in the passport.

Kurt... there are agents who will handle these things for you and give good advice, for a few hundred rupees, if you wish to save yourself some hassle. My wife had such a person deal with replacing a lost passport, and other changes such as adding spouse name and new address at the same time. He was very quick and efficient, and was part of a travels company.

I suppose we were lucky to get a good man: if you were in Chennai I could recommend.

Ahhh....

Yes. That's a really good idea.

In theory.

Then there's the reality of dealing with a government office, especially the passport office, although in all fairness I have to say that its service has improved a great deal in the last few years.

Yes, there was police verification. She applied for replacement of a lost passport. She paid extra for Tatkal, and did it all through an agent. I think she had to visit the Passport office once, but mostly avoided the considerable queueing.

The police actually came to our house after the passport had been issued, and were happy that I was able to show it to them (she was out), along with my own papers and proof of our marriage, and speaking to her on the phone. The cop was a polite and reasonable man, and there was no outstretched hand.

This is partly because agents pull strings to earn their fee, and partly because things really have improved at the passport office. The issue of my wife's original passport, was a nightmare. At one point they tried to say it was her fault that they had put Sex=M and that was just one of the mistakes.

Given that you are asking for a change to something so fundamental as your name, I think you must expect to produce all sorts of documentation, and verification, and to be able to give a convincing reason why you did not query it when the passport was first issued.

It might be easier to change your name to whatever it says in the passport!

On police verification:

I got a new passport issued recently, old one was expiring soon.
No personal details required changing.

No police verification.

I suspect that the no personal details changing bit would make it fine. Even in India they can't check everything. Surely?

Capt... having a travelling career you must have had several passports. Have your experiences been much the same, or have they changed over time?

It's undoubtedly got better.

My first few passports (in Mumbai) involved huge waiting and frequent trips to the passport office there. Of course, my first passport was in 1978.

For the last few times I have had to do passport related stuff here in Hyderabad (renewals, extensions and additional booklets etc included), have gone to the passport office just once in the last seven years.

Till a year or so ago you could do the stuff at many 'e-seva' centres dotted around the city. Very convenient. No rush, sometimes you were the only customer.
But they stopped that awhile ago.

Even now, its easy. You can do a lot of stuff online, including filling in the forms.. and you get an appointment at the passport office. Time and date.
If you don't want to even do that, an authorised agent will fill in the online forms and go for your appointment. That's what I did a couple of months ago. Handed over my passport and photos and 500 rupees at home to the guy (that is 500 over the passport office fee) and got my passport by mail three weeks later. My total involvement would have been ten minutes, including when he returned for me to sign a couple of things.

If while reissuing, they refer the documents earlier submitted....then my case can be treated as a re-issue with the name in the document, which was correctly filled by me.

And if they don't refer the documents submitted earlier while re-issuing(which i hope not), then there could be trouble. Do anyone have any idea?

Kurt, perhaps you should either make a trip to the passport office, or get hold of an agent who will handle everything.

If going there yourself, see the PRO (public relations offcr).. usually every passport office has one.

Or you may not even need to do that, and get information at the enquiry counter.
