Registration with FRRO

Hi guys,

I am an Indian my wife is from Turkey.The Indian embassy in Turkey issued her a Entry visa on which it is written issue date is 12/12/2007 & expiry date of 11/12/2007 but they have mentioned in the special endorsement column "3 Months stay".
So does she have to register with FRRO?

The most important thing is to know what type of visa it is?

If it is a tourist visa, you do not have to register.

Nothing to do with the question, but if you plan to visit India regularly, or wish to do so without such a restriction on length of stay, I suggest you look into getting a PIO Card for your wife.

It is an Entry visa.So you mean to say that even though visa is valid for one year
but just because they have metioned 3 months stay we dont have to register...?

Entry Visa? You mean it says on it: Type X? It is curious to get an X visa for short term stay.

Can you tell us a little more about the purpose of your visit and why you got this sort of visa?

If in doubt it would be better to visit the FRRO in your city, as, if you are required to register, it may be necessary to do so within 14 days of arrival.

Oops..!Sorry for the confusion "Mike" & "Nick".

Well we had registered our marraige in Turkey.The Indian embassy said to us that they will issue a entry visa but on the visa the type is stated as "XV".I dont know what that means.But that time we still had not registered our marraige in India I guess that is the reason they gave her a visa with 3 months stay.

If type is 'xv' (and I don't know what this is but maybe standing for x visa?} but apart from that it isn't under any of the categories that are required to be registered within 14 days.
However, it wouldn't hurt to go to FRO and verify your requirements. If you are leaving the country within 180 days there is no need to go to FRO or register. If you register your marriage in India then you can apply for PIO card for your wife after 12 months is up. (Is PIO card available for spouse of Indian National with marriage registered in Turkey?)

Nope that marraige certificate has no value here.We have submitted our application for Court Marraige here in India.The process will take anything between one to one & half months till we get tha marraige certificate.

One marriage is enough --- for the entire world!

You should have no need to register your marriage, if it is legally valid in another country, in India.

There is certainly no need to have the marriage registered in India in order to get a PIO card. The requirement is simply marriage to an Indian citizen (etc).

The Foreign Marriage Act, 1969

Registration in India of a marriage solemnised under the laws of a foreign country would appear to be an option, but...

It appears your outside India, marriage certificate should be proof enough doesn't it? Well, that's what the wording from the Act seems to signify... Problem is many officials in many govt departments don't even know or understand their own Acts and rules.

Well we said to the people in the indian embassy in Ankara whether they can accept Turkish marraige & issue a Indian marraige certificate.They said they dont have anyone par to that of a Marraige officer to solemenize the marraige & today when I called the FRRO here in Mumbai they said that they need a marraige certificate from India & they cannot accept a marraige certificate from a foreign country.This are some extracts from the Foreign Marraige Act--

which surely the Indian embassy in Turkey did not had & by the way I am in Mumbai.

I never heard of such a thing.

What I would do... Just apply for PIO on usual form, giving your Turkish marriage certificate as proof. Have handy something like your wedding album or other secondary proof that you are married.

Consider that many, many millions of married Indians in India have never actually registered their marriages.

I doubt very much that many Indians legally married overseas ever do this registration thing.

Just make the application, do not enquire about anything: if any queries are to be made then let them make them. If you make them they have to answer, and they make up answers that are not good for you. (my schoolboy motto: Do not ask, it just gives them the chance to say 'no'

).

It is sometimes necessary to push past the front desk. My own story of registering at FRRO was only resolved because my wife got us sitting in front of the Director's desk. That was her skill, knack, knowledge of how government departments function.

You should be able to ask to see the Chief Immigration Officer, or even more senior person. In the Chennai Office there is a notice to the effect that public may see senior person at certain times without appointment.

(my marriage was performed by a registrar in India, so I cannot advise from experience. Just I cannot imagine the Indian High Commission, London, not accepting a British marriage certificate had we married in UK)
