Registration with Foreign Registration Office
Registration with Foreign Registration Office
This item has been beat to death in the forums but give me one more try, it is still clear as mud. My visa issued last month has a statement "Registration required within 14 days of arrival in India for visas for more than 180 days" that statement is very clear. Visa type is T multiple, 10 year. No other statement saying anything close to an explanation of registration. I did go to the Bureau of Immigration and the following statement is available.
http://immigrationindia.nic.in/faq_registration2.htm
"Registration is required for a foreigner who enters India on a long term (visa valid for more than 180 days) STUDENT* (Including those who come for study of yoga/Vedic culture/Indian system of dance and music), RESEARCH ,EMPLOYMENT, MISSIONARY* AND MEDICAL* AND MEDICAL ATTENDANT VISA* within 14 days of his/her **first arrival in India."
"Foreigners visiting India on other categories of long term VISA including Business VISA would not require registration if he/she does not intend to stay in India for more than 180 days on each visit. If he intends to stay for more than 180 days on a single visit, he should get himself registered well before the expiry of 180 days."
Where I am having a hard time is this statement contradicts the very simple statement on the visa. The visa will be presented at the airport on departure and it will be this statement that will be used by the departure official to verify my documents are in order to depart. My feeling is that on arrival try to talk to an official from Foreigners Regional Registration Officers (FRROs). I really don't want to spend my time caught up in a government office. Any way to set me straight on this potentially serious topic?

Live to travel, travel to live
You have a T visa. You cannot stay more than 180 days per visit. So no registration required.
The other categories of Long Term Visa not mentioned are Entry Visa, Project Visa, certain class of Journalist Visa.

I will be in Indian from Jan 17 2013 returning to the states Feb 28 2013. Thanks for your answers. This will be a very exciting trip and I want to make sure that it is without bureaucratic problems interrupting me. I do not have a detailed itinerary yet, my rough idea is to stay in Northern India staying in a location until I see what I want and then move on to another location. Before India I fly into Nepal on Jan 3 and then fly to India Jan 17 to start my adventure there. I am like a sponge at this time collecting information and places to visit. I have a web page that I have been referencing the Festivals and dates which I will also incorporate this into my itinerary.
What I like is architecture, cultural events, nature, walking and observing people. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Most definitely not, no. It would only kick in if staying for longer than 180 days; which as a foreign tourist you can't do.These are just standard phrasings, meant to cover a range of categories. It just simply doesn't apply to foreign tourists. All a foreign tourist needs to know is their tourist visa will mention an expiry date, and that is when you need to be out. The visa is valid from date of issue, not from date of entry into the country. Again, it will mention its expiry date. Length of validity depends on circumstances; the tourist visa will never be valid for more than 180 days.
Your confusion may arise from you having the US 10-year Indian tourist visa; that's a pretty unique privision anyway, a similar deal applies to just a very few nationalities. But it still never allows you to stay for longer than 180 days in one go. So disregard any stipulations on having to register if staying for longer: You can't, and so again it really doesn't apply to you.
(And so holding that visa, this stuff about expiry date and such is going to be a little different for you. I don't know how that works for Americans, or on their first India trip they use it for. I suppose for you the clock does start ticking upon entry, but I don't know that. Either way, for a two-month visit it should be no issue at all.)
Dek, I can't help you on your question, sorry.
