Re-entry on 10 Yr Tourist Visa

This is for my friend, she is currently in India on a 10 year tourist visa, with a maximum stay of 6 months each visit. She has already crossed the border once after six months by going to Singapore and back after 5 days. She wants to do this two more times so that her total stay will be 2 years. She is considering Nepal now. We have looked at the links regarding reentry on this type of visa and there are conflicting views. Does anyone have the latest on whether or not there are problems?
Thanks.

Nepal is a problem these days and so is Thailand. You should consider Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong instead. I have had several friends get a 2 week entry stamp when entering from Nepal or flying in from Bangkok. These are guys who have been in India for 2-3 years on tourist visas. I have heard through the Consul General in HK that these 10year visas might be discontinued in the next 12 months and they would only issue 2 year multiple entry visas instead.

thanks for the reply on both. My friend was planning to fly from Nepal to Delhi, would that make a difference? (as opposed to crossing overland?)

The first time is usually not a big deal but if its done more than once the immigration officials get suspicious. Flying is not going to make any difference.

We have had this problem with some of the guys at work. These days we send them back to to the US for a few weeks.

What's a 2 week entry stamp? What does that mean?

I have a tourist visa for 5 years, with a maximum stay of 6 month each visit,....I have no problems travelling in and out of India....most of my travel destinations are India, Hongkong and Dubai. This same sector I travel about 5-8 times a year...

Also known as a "transit visa;" it gives you two weeks more and then you have to leave the country.

Suspicious of what? A multiple entry visa is a multiple entry visa. It doesn't matter what country you exit to. The simple, legal point is that you have left India. There's no dithering to be done on the part of officials anywhere. Your 10-year visa is valid. You are not getting a new visa when you cross the border. You are just collecting exit and entry stamps, which is what "multiple entry" refers to . . .

That's exactly what I thought - what is the meaning of a 10-year visa if any official can invalidate it and narrow you down to a two-week transit instead of ten years? You're not doing anything illegal by leaving and coming back the next day. If anyone should be unhappy with this - it would be the Nepalese, because you are "using" them to keep yourself legal in India. Why would anybody in Indian care, as long as your visa is legal? Maybe "oldhippie" is talking about going to Nepal to get a new visa?
