Re-entry on 10 year visa

I am wondering if there is a maximum duration required to remain out of the country before re-entering with a ten year tourist visa. I am contemplating travelling to Sri Lanka every six months but wasn't sure how long I will need to stay there before returning to India.

That's a good question kira and I don't think we have a definite answer on it here.

I actually emailed the consulate in New York last week with the same exact question but have not received a response about it.

Anyone on the site want to call them and find out--it's 212-774-0600

I can't since I work during the day but am willing to supply a calling card to pay for the long distance charges for anyone who want's to call them.

Any volunteers can just send me a PM and I will supply a calling card to use. (valid in U.S. only)

If you use the visa for short one - three week trips they do don't really care but if you use them for long trips (4-6 months) the immigration guys will start stamping you for 7 or 14 days every time you visit.

The Delhi Immigration recently stamped my colleagues 10 year visa "USED" as he had been in and out several times. He eventually managed to get an employment visa.

Mike..Its pointless contacting the Indian consulate about this as they don't really have acurate info. It all depends on the guys behind the desks at your point of entry.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post! I would ideally like to stay in India long-term and am trying to figure out the best way to go about it........I thought with a 10 year visa I could simply hop over to Colombo every six months and return no prob - I appreciate your feedback immensely, as it has made me more aware of the potential drawbacks of my 'plan'

hey - my 10 year visa says, registration not required if stay is less than 180 days - did you consider registering within 15 days of entering the country to stay longer? I guess you need a valid reason to stay longer than 6 months, I hope you have one !

Thanks for the tip caliyogi! I wasn't aware of the need to register....I didn't think that registering would enable me to stay longer than 6 months because the 10 year visa is only good for 6 months at a time (?)

I just found the following info from the Auroville website (http://www.auroville-international.o...formation2.htm)

"The Indian Government requires that you leave the country for a minimum of 3 days before you may re-enter. Many people go to Sri Lanka for three days and return on this same Visa. (The trip back and forth from Chennai to Colombo will cost you about $150 including minimal lodging.)"

(this applies to those with multiple entry ten year tourist visas)
