Generally, the answer is YES! Particularly at immigration counters.

How would an immigration official know that the OP's current passport which holds his visa is not the first passport he's ever had?

Do Indian passports say "This is the 3rd passport issued" or something?

In the good old era, Indian passports (old cancelled and fresh one) were stapled together if it had valid visas. I have seen desi business people carry four-five booklets stapled together.

So, if you had 5 year multiple-entry visa to Brazil and every other country (pre-schengen) you had to point out that the visa was in the older passport.

While passport controls in the airports were cool with it; not so clueful guys who woke you up in the trains were not There were no websites, or google search and print out the relevant paragraphs of individual country...What a PIA.

In the States no one will ask for your old passport. You do not need it it is cancelled and no longer a document

You only carry your old passport (hole punched) if it have valid visas. It is meaningful only to the other passport controls.

So, presumably we can conclude that as the OP's visa is in his new passport, he does not need to carry his old one.

What is the point in carrying one or more cancelled passports?

If it contains no current visas, it is an invalid travel document, and totally useless.

I merely stated what US State Deptt does with US passports. As I mentioned, if OP's indian passports are not stapled together, and there are no active visas in the old passport, then yes ! no need to lug it around.
