question about flight connection with an expired visa - ->>
hello!
i apologize if this is a daft question, but i really don't know. my visa expires february 1st - i came to kolkata to try to get an extension, which was denied earlier today. my ticket from delhi back to london is currently booked for the 13th of february (i wasn't aware of how visa extensions worked when i booked it.) my love and i are thinking of going to thailand for the interim feb 1-13 period, & then coming back to delhi within the 24 hours before the feb 13th flight. how does this work, visa-wise? if i don't leave the international terminal, am i allowed to come back through india with a recently expired visa if i hold a ticket for a connecting flight?? any information would be very much appreciated... thanks! pcws |

You might want to get a new visa - or just a transit visa - while you're in Bangkok just to be certain there won't be a problem when you arrive back in Delhi.

If your Indian VISA has expired, you will not be allowed to board the plane in Thailand.
If you are flying into Delhi and out again without leaving the Airport, (I think you have to stay air-side .. airports vary) you will need a Transit visa, otherwise you will need a new visitors visa.

I have seen it both ways, some are allowed through without a visa and others must get a transit visa. My hypothesis is that going through immigration and collecting luggage triggers the need for a transit visa. People have reported a problem with getting luggage transferred from the incoming airline to the out going airline (some outgoing airlines won't do this for you). Hence, they needed a transfer visa. This is not a definitive answer! This is just my read of quite a number of cases on this and another board. I would like a definitive statement from the Sphinx, the Indian Government..

I'd go with Mickey's suggestion, although you could try for the transit visa.
