Pundit Birth Certificate : Valid for Passport?

Hello!

I have a question on behalf of a friend. My friend is Indian born and bred. He is trying to gather all of the required documents in order to obtain his passport (for the first time). However, he has no 'real' birth certificate (and this is where I probably get told off : so please apology in advance!). That is to say, he hasn't got anything like the kind we expect in the West. The closest he has is a rough piece of paper with the scribblings of a Pundit, noting his fathers name, the date and the name of the baby. There's no stamp, or anything remotely official about it.

Is this accepted as a birth certificate? and if not what other pieces of ID would be needed? I've sent emails to the closest passport agency, here in Lucknow and so far no reply. Before taking the trip to be told he should have brought, this that or whatever, I thought I'd see what advice IMers have.

Thanks
Victoria

bold mine

Quote:
Proof of Date of Birth (attach one of the following):

Birth certificate issued by a Municipal Authority or district office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths;

Date of birth certificate from the school last attended by the applicant or any other recognized educational institution; or an Affidavit sworn before a Magistrate/Notary stating date/place of birth as per the specimen in ANNEXURE ‘A’ by illiterate or semi-illiterate applicants.

N.B.: In the case of applicants born on or after 26.01.89, only Birth Certificate issued by the Municipal Authority or the Office of the Registrar of Births & Deaths is acceptable.

A school leaving certificate (as given when a student passes board exams in the tenth or twelfth class) should be perfectly acceptable; it normally is and invariably has the date of birth entered on it.

Thanks for the info Capt!

I had seen those pages but, and here goes again... the school leavers certificate doesn't have the real birth date on it (long story partly due to lack of engl num etc by father at the time). It will in effect make him 4 years younger than he is!! (at only 21 yrs that's quite a bit)

I suppose if it gets the passport done...

It wont be accepted a birth Certificate for any official purpose..

If the person has been born and brought up in India, then he is bound to have numerous things to show as an evidence of date of birth..

As captain said Board Certificate will do perfectly fine...Driving License, Voter ID card, ration Card are other options that I can immediately recall...

It is possible to have a date of birth corrected by a Magistrate on a certificate. It should also be possible to get a Magistrate to attest to the date of birth as per the 'pundit's certificate, ie the janampatri,

May be a bit of a run around now, but better in the long run. 4 years can show up pretty easily at 21.

definately!! that's really good to know, i'll look into it for him. I think it's best to get it corrected, and have a proper passport now, than try and mess around later, i'm sure that after you've had your first passport it's harder to try and convince them the date was wrong without raising eyebrows!
many thanks
