Somewhat off-topic to this thread!

The best source of information on this one would be the web site of an Indian embassy in Pakistan.

If you need further info, please start a new thread.

Mod note: Query moved to create its own thread.

I'm irritatingly having trouble finding any website for Indian embassies in Pakistan. You'd think they must be out there.

I have heard something about this though. The Home Ministry site would be good to search..

That's what I was going through, among others. You'll find some relevant govt. sites following the "links" link in my signature (post #3 above), but together with some googling I found addresses alright but not any sites.

Maybe search harder, or give them a call.

Thanks macadinha, i spose the query does warrant its own thread..

I have been trying to call but no one answers the phone. It is the correct number though as I got a recorded message. Anyways, in two days I'll have the answer... and will post it here for other pplz reference.

what i do know so far is that the indian embassy is located in islamabad. you have to specify the cities you'll be visiting. it takes a week to process the visa which is a single entry 180 day visa.

i wondered if the process was the same for europeans/westerners, are they required to specify cities? or is the police registration just for visiting pakistanis due to the special relationship the two countries share.

Probably, yes. I don't know too much about it. I know any visitor is given a slip on their inflight asking about some details including where you intend to visit and what any references there are, but no one gives a toss what you fill in there and you can basically leave it open, I don't think it applies at all to any but a few nationalities.

Looking around just now I think I saw an Indian embassy in another Pakistani city as well btw (Karachi?) Not sure, and I'm not doing it again, as I'm not about to go there

ps You'll be aware Pakistan is currently going through no slight upheaval, which might explain your trouble getting through (apart from the general fun of calling up the Subcontinent). If and how that reflects on cross-border travel for Pakistani residents, I have no idea.

I've been looking at the Immigration Dept website. But have to confess that I don't feel much wiser for it!

There's some stuff about Pakistani nationals having to bring an additional visa application form to India with them, and also it states a requirement that they should register within 24 hours.

I'd rather suggest taking a direct look at that site and making your own interpretations, rather than trying to make any myself.

thanks Nick! I chkd the site and found that bit about registration and all. My friend is a US citizen applying for visa to india from islamabad, so not sure whether that's applicable. I guess we'll learn soon enough.

macadinha, there used to be an embassy in karachi, but it's been closed down.

i asked my friends abt the situation is ISL with the emergency and all, they say it's business as usual... and in fact ppl feel safer because of the heavy police presence. anyway, i know ppl who have been to pak and come back with great experiences. i intend to do a reciprocal visit sometime next year.

That changes the whole situation (and the thread title has been changed accordingly).

I still can't be sure, but I don't see how he would be treated as anything other than any other US citizen in India in that case. So, as far as I know, no local registration required, except in designated sensitive areas or in case of protracted stays. Which doesn't mean it's not better to check for yourself.

If you'd mentioned this before, you might have gotten the better advice.

hmm.. well i spose i shd have been more clear; but i'm not sure how much that changes the situation as he was born in pak and it says that on his US passport. i have an indian friend who went to pak on a UK passport and he still had to do police registration there.

the visa is expected to be issued on Tuesday.. we'll find out then.

I'm sorry but I can't make head or tail of this anymore, but as a general comment to all users, filling in such helpful details will be helpful for others to help you.

How does your Indian/UK friend in Pakistan relate to your Pakistani/US friend in India? I'm sorry but I give up here, call me a cranky b*stard all you want. Yes, as you figured already it may or may not be a problem. So good luck with your research. And if you want an international crowd to understand you, maybe SMS abbreviations are not the best way to begin.

Let us know how it ends, for the benefit of others. From other posts of yours I by now take it you are quite experienced in India, which might also have been handy to know, so people can skip the basics. This isn't against you, it's a comment on posting styles in general. You (plural) can't expect people to know details you (plural) didn't provide. And travel agents or embassy personnel we are not (and we might be far less accommodating if we were).

machadinha:

are you the Cranky Mod newbies should beware of?!

Thanks for your help so far, and you needn't worry about making head or tail of this thread anymore. i'll post what i find out for the benefit of others.

i've hardly been here a day now, i don't quite have the hang of this place just yet. had i started a new thread, i would have begun with a nice intro/background and stated the full facts and all that.. but given that this was a split from another thread, it didn't quite work out that way. Some of you veteran posters just seem to pounce upon newbies if God forbid we failed to mention some detail!

anyways... hope my language was satisfactory, and i apologise for my punctuation in advance... i hate capitals!

Hm. Yes, well, um, the original thread it was on was asking about deals for European visitors pertaining to whether they could now only stay 90 days or not. So I guess some details would have been welcome there just as well, as it had nothing to do with the original question. Which is why it was moved, hoping this would make it easier for you to find your specific answers.

I'm sorry for any crankiness on my part; the thing is there's a lot of good members here with a lot of good information, but if you're not given the right info to go on, it may turn out to be just wasted time. I didn't count the minutes but I spent quite some time yesterday going over several sites for you; and all out of my own choice, of course, no one forced me to. But it's still frustrating sometimes, and had we known the intricacies of it the above details wouldn't have needed to be bothered about by several members.

Anyway, I'll gladly hear any results you can find, and I'm sure many will with me. And don't let me scare you off; it's a handy and generally friendly and helpful web board.

No, I'm the cranky one!

Have to admit that I did think "wish she'd told us that" about the US citizenship --- but hey! whatever! It all comes out in the wash

Mach... his Pakistani origin makes a difference wherever in the world he is getting a Indian visa: it is likely to make the process longer, not over the counter, and the visa is likely to be restricted. I say this based on applications in UK that I know of. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are two countries-of-origin that can make life complicated for India visa applicants. Even if you hold other citizenship, and even if you were born elsewhere!
