Procedure for "Change in Place of Birth" in indian Passport

Hi all,

I need to change my Place of Birth in my valid Indian Passport that holds a valid B1 Visa of USA.

Could any of you tell me the procedure to change the place of birth in the passport.

From what I understand, if your place of birth is incorrect in your passport, then you need to go to the passport office with your birth certificate. If the place of birth on your birth certificate is different from what is recorded on your passport, you can have it changed. The visa can be transferred from your old passport to your new for a small fee at the US embassy.

Just out of curiosity - how come you never noticed the place of birth was incorrect on your passport?

I think it could happen, I had wrong date of birth and I used that for 20 years, I only got it changed while going to UK for my masters degree... To do these little things in India can be a big hassle and sometimes they take 9-10 months to do such thing... luckily I was studying in Bangalore and the p.o. is much better here...
Between my date of birth made me 1 year younger..lol

Sorry for the late response.
I am explaining my situation in detail -
My Birth Certificate mentions the Place of birth as Serkadu which village and is a part of Vellore district in Tamil nadu
but in my passport it is mentioned as Vellore, Tamil Nadu.

Is it possible to change the Place of Birth in passport to Serkadu, Vellore, Tamilnadu?

What is the procedure for doing the same?

Hi Archuram,

In principle, you will have to get a court order from a first class judicial magistrate to change the place of birth. The only exception is if you applied correctly, and the PO made an error. In such cases, they can immediately change it.

In the meantime, I also heard rumours that there is a government/court circular asking POs to impound passports where there are errors, fine the holder Rs 5000, and issue a new corrected passport (this is a blessing, if indeed true!). If you can find this circular, please pass it on to me as well, because I need it too.

I have a similar problem. The birth date mentioned in my Indian passport is not correct, the date mentioned on my birth certificate is. I am living abroad, in the Netherlands. I have been told by the Indian Embassy in The Hague that I need to produce a First Class Magistrate Court order to get a new passport issued. How can I get such court order?

I urgently need a lawyer based in Kochin/Ernakulam, Kerala State to help me solve this issue asap. Can you point out a reliable lawyer/notary who is knowledable in such issue?

what documents are needed to correct mistakes in date of birth. I had this wrong date of birth for 25 years, but always wanted my original date of birth appear on all legal documents. I think must get it fixed. School teacher made a little mistake and I am bearing it all since then. please advise how get it fixed.

You should have corrected it at school itself, or in college itself, now it is too late to get it changed on the numerous documents which you have acquired in the past.




I feel it wont make much difference, because passport offices might have some norms on what level to scoop down in date of birth, because in India there are lots of small rural villages, which come under some village, and then under some town, and then some district, so they obviously cant go on mentioning all details.

Anyways if in all your documents if it is mentioned as Serkadu, Vellore, TN, like that it wont matter much, because the p o office people must have seen and put it as vellore TN, even in my passport it is vellore TN, but I was born in Vellore ;-)

Ask me about that! My son's OCI application was refused because the place of birth on the birth certificate did not match the one on the passport. The birth certificate had Area, City, Country whereas the passport had just the City. I had to get that corrected before he was granted his OCI. Anyway, it was a Canadian ppt, so it was not too difficult to get the details changed.

In my case, the Visa officer had called us for an interview to explain the reason for the discrepancy in the place of Birth. When it was explained to him, he asked us not to bother about changing the place of birth in the old Indian Passport (as it was no longer valid - since we had taken up Canadian citizenship). But he insisted that we change the information on his Canadian passport. In your case, since the Canadian passport is having the correct information, you should not have any problems. Just curious though - what about the information on the Landing Papers? I am keeping my fingers crossed to hear that they are correct too.

Landing paper is showing same place as Indian passport.
Should I amend this info on Landing paper and apply for OCI?
What do you suggest in this case?
