Police verification failed for tatkal passport while in abroad

Hello All,
My wife took tatkal passport and travelled with me to UK. Police verification happened recently(a month back) and since she was not present at the house, they noted it and sent a letter saying Personal identification failed. Now we are heading back to India, will there be any problem for clearing immigration in UK/ Indian airport? Anything we can do to mitigate this risk? We shall go to local police station soon we reach India? can some one share some advice that we can follow.

You were required to enclose a Verification Certificate (VC) issued by the police (as per format in Annex G) along with the application form for fresh passports under Tatkaal.

It is a good decision to contact the local police station with an application in triplicate (one copy as acknowledgement to you), and then contact the passport office to clear the air.

You should have been aware that Police vdrification is done after passport issue for Tatkal passports. If you were intending to travel immediately after the passport was obtained, you should have kept the RPO and Police station informed of the travel by submitting a letter aong with Flight tickets and British Visa copy on the passport. Failure to inform the police BEFORE the verification happened is not a good thing. Neither is Failure of Police verification itself, for whatever cause.

If you can get someone to the Police station with an explanation/apology and copies of passport, Visa, Flight/Boarding pass, it could be better. The RPO can cancel a Passport for failure of Police verification.

Not while you are entering the country.

But if the RPO takes any steps to cancel/invalidate the passport and informs the airports of it, then when going out of the country, you will have trouble.

My passport status is "Passport application is under review at Regional Passport Office" for past 20 days and i applied for passport on 5/07/2012. I don't know what to do. I am totaly depressed. Any body please suggest me.

I cannot comment on this exact situation, but I have personal experience on a similar matter. A few years ago I had renewed my passport under the Tatkal scheme. Upon receiving my passport, I proceeded abroad for studies and while the police verification is normally done later, in my case it never got done. This never caused me any problems while traveling. In fact, I used that passport to travel to many countries (including India), several times.

Once that passport booklet was full, I applied for a new passport at a consulate outside of India. During this process it was discovered by my old RPO that police verification was not done. I wasn't denied a new passport, but the only thing I had to do was to get police verification done again. However, I was also advised that it would be easier to go to go back to India on the passport that had no police verification done, and then apply under the Tatkal scheme for a new passport again.

I did not have any trouble flying back into India even after this incident. In fact, I flew in, applied for a new passport under Tatkal scheme, received it and then had police verification completed as well.

So I suspect you will not have problems flying in to India.

@sehgalanuj: In your case, the PV was never done by the police, but in the OP's case the PV was done and the applicant was not in India. I am not sure how the RPO/police treat the case of a Tatkal applicant who has already left India before PV, but if they see that there was serious misrepresentation or something similarly sinister/suspicious they may invalidate the passport and take action accordingly.

This is quite true. Maybe it is best to have someone contact the RPO and clarify the situation. In my experience, they are hard to reach, but willing to help if you get in touch with them.
