Police registration papers at the airport

I will be going to Germany in 2 weeks and return after a month.

I'm just wondering if they will take my registration papers from me at the airport or am I to keep them?

I have only left the country twice for the past 11 years, the last time 5 years ago, and I can't remember how they do it? I vaguely remember once they wanted to keep them and I had a long argument with them, saying that I will return very soon and then I will need the papers again, so in the end they let me keep them. The second time they didn't ask to keep them.

So what is the right procedure?

If you are talking about the resident permit, the rule is that one has to hand it over to the airport authorities only if that is your final departure from India or if you are planning to return on a new visa. This also depends on the validity of those papers, if they will still be valid by the time your return you can keep them (if returning on the same visa). But they seem to ask for a photocopy of your resident permit anyway, so keep one ready (or else they might insist on taking your original).

But you are a PIO, I presume, so no visa issues.

Hi icetea, thanks for replying.

My visa as well as the resident papers are still good till 2008. Yes, I made photocopies already.

It's always good to know the official rules, then I can talk with more confidence in case should they say something else.

Thanks!
