Thanks for the support people. I was about to start breathing into a paper bag when this thread started. We've only been planning this move for 2+ years. Even scheduled ourselves to have a baby before moving over there.

Imagine how embarrassed I'd be telling EVERYONE we've been yapping to, 'oh nevermind'.

Not that I wish to boast but my resident permit allows me to stay for the whole length of my PIO - subject to informing of when my passport is renewed!!

Brilliant! I think you've trumped us all there

And it contributes to the pool of knowledge of what is possible.

pennylessinindia - That's very good to hear, congrats! Could you please give a little info on how you managed this? I'm guessing the duration is all at the discretion of the registration officer. Maybe some are more leniant/generous than others?

Much as I would like to claim it was something I did it was not .

I applied for my PIO at the same place that I registered some year or so previously and when I was given my PIO they asked to see my Registration book took it away and came back with a stamp extending the validity for duration of PIO. My previous entry was on an x 5year visa and that too gave me 5 years.

Oh! Good for you

When I got my PIO they also took my RP, and came back with a new one extended to five years. But, as I said, I wasn't expecting that so it was a nice surprise.

It's amazing how inconsistent these people are! But maybe because my previous was a 1-year. Maybe next time they'll give me more than 5 years.

The RP now, by the way, is not a book any longer: it is an A4 sheet of paper.

Not at all the sort of thing one could carry around; it would be a good idea if they gave a card like the driving licence

And, how poorly thought out the the PIO and OCI processes appear to be...

Just an observation...It is quite conceivable that Nick-H could be an OCI (Overseas Citizen of India), but how can Nick-H be a Person of Indian Origin???? .......yet thats exactly waht he is considered to be....He has the PIO card to prove it!!

....(I am assuming that Nick-H has no person of Indian Origin in his DNA......perhaps indirectly thru Alexander the Great when he was here with his "troops"????).

Indian or Chinese person can be a Citizen of UK anytime ....but noway will such a person be called a person of british (anglo-saxon, norman, celtic etc) origin.

The "Indian" PIO / OCI thinggys are topsy turvy...I love it!! Just sticking it to the rest of the world!!

They told me that the paperwork was done and the card issued --- but the black hair and brown eyes would take some time

this post is really helpful - thanks. We are embarking on the PIO route too once other papers are in order(I am a Scot and my husband is Indian). I hope the black hair doesn't take too long as the grey hair will get there first!!

You're lucky... mine's going to fall out first!

I guess they could have called us people with no Indian genetics Honorary Persons of Indian Origin!

Of course there are such people who don't need spouses (I always thing the plural of spouse should be spice?) to qualify; plenty were born here before the nineteen-fifty-something cut-off date, or are descended from people who were.

True - there would be many HPIOs

Hi, I wanted to know after the 180 days of stay should a PIO holder register at a police station or Foreign registration office?

Also if someone can let me know what will be done (steps or process) at the police station or the Foreign registration office

Make sure you register before the 180 days is up, as you will be breaking the law if you don't. You'll want to go to the Foreigner's Registration Office, which may well be based in a police station.

If wherever you are heading is anything like Pune you will have a relaxing half day spent queuing and hanging about. The Pune Police site has details on what you need to take. The page doesn't directly mention PIO cards, that would make things easy, but you want the 'Long term Visa Extension' section. Where it says 'Xerox of the passport page and visa page' they really mean Xeroxes of every document you are taking in quadlicate. Also bring proof of where you live: letting agreement, bills, etc, as well as a substantial supply of passport photos.

Once you manage to hand everything over to one of the staff's satisfaction you'll be asked to return in a few days to pick up your residency permit. Turn up, wait some more, and pick up your scrap of paper. Read it carefully to see how long a stay they've given you, and renew it before it runs out.
