I thought the tax clearance thing had been done away with long ago?

I am a PIO card holder (and an Indian-tax payer), and have not experienced any additional formalities on arrival on departure or arrival.

Only thing, last time, was they quiried that I had been here longer than 180 days, but were fine when I showed my registration/residence cert. ...But juniors don't have to register, I think?

Thanks Nick so if you have your regitration papers and you travel docs you can just book a flight and leave. Both my kids had to be reg by the CID here in Kullu so I will have to get them a clearence certificate or a signiture in there passport. Proberly to do with my last thread comments bit dangerous in places here so everyones on file.

Have you/they been here longer than 180 days on your current stay?

In this case, you/they should be ready to show that you have fulfilled the obligation to register --- by showing the RC/RP.

A couple of years back, I left India after 18 months unbroken stay, and they said nothing. I'll let you know what happens the next time... in Feb 2010!

I don't think you need it. I don't think you need anything!

But I can understand that the airport would be the wrong place to discover officials who think otherwise! Do let us know how you get on with SP and Airport officials.

Second Thought
... One is supposed to inform the FRO/FRRO if leaving for more than a few weeks, and one is supposed to surrender the RP/RC. If the SP wants to take it off you, make sure that you have a copy your son can show at the airport.

With previous visas, if I was absent more than six weeks I was required to inform the FRO - I did this by writing a letter, and that was all that was needed. Reading this thread makes me think if we are registered at FRO with our PIO cards, then this informing stuff continues as before with other Visas?

As for clearance certificate - I've never had to show anything like this ever either. And I agree with you Nick, we don't need permission to leave India either. I also thought we don't need anything else to go in and out of India - just our current passport and PIO card.

A PIO card is supposed to make stuff easier --- not harder! Whilst there are freedoms that it does not grant, like freedom from registration, it does not impose anything.

My son left on the 03 nov and apart from the hassle of not being allowed into the airport without having a valid ticket he phoned me from inside and said he had no problems getting though immigration they only looked at his passport and PIO card and didnt ask for any thing else or ask any questions so it looks like the PIO lets you leave with the minimum of fuss....Shbash

Hey, that's what it is for!

No reason for it to be treated like anything but an ordinary visa.

Exactly. There should not be any need for any additional paper work.

On the other hand, the CCU emigration staff asked me, when I was visiting Seoul in October, about the FRO letter - I had that and it was cool. All they wanted to know is whether as a foreigner you had registered with FRO. Other than that they could care less

Cheers

And the FRO registration shouldn't come up as your son is under 16:
