PIO Card holder with dual citizenship

I have dual citizenship and my PIO Card is registered under my passport that is expiring in March 2014.

My resident Permit expires January 2014 and I was said that I should have a new passport and apply for the extension of my Resident Permit in November 2013 (soon).

Now In order to renew my passport where my PIO Card is registered I have to fly to Delhi from Kerala, and I was looking for an option to avoid this trip.

As I said, I have dual citizenship, and my other passport where my PIO Card is NOT registered, expires on the year 2019.

I asked my local Registration office and the officer told me that he couldn't do it. That I would have to go to the FRRO (Cochin or Trivandrum) and if they do it he would accept that.

Has somebody had a similar situation? Is it possible to change the passport in the PIO Card to a different nationality one?

Thanks
Luis

Is your PIO expiring in jan 2014 ? with the passport expiring in Mar same year ?
To make life easier can you renew your passport say july this year and soon after you get the passport renew and apply to get your pio renew.
My understanding is your PIO is linked to your passport. Forget the second passport which expire Jan 2019. Can you mail to Mha in delhi to process ?
Do not confuse the babus in delhi with 2 passports.

The Residential Permit is expiring in Jan 2014 and the passport in March 2014. The PIO is valid until year 2026. So .. Would it be too confusing if I just show up at the FRRO Trivandrum and instead of asking if I can do it,, just tell them I want to Update my passport information giving the other nationality passport?

I Mean,, the indian way.. not asking if it is possible, just trying to do it .

Seems to me, just guessing of course... when applying for some kind of visa or immigration status your nationality is very much a part of the deal; an integral part of your identity. That is, your PIO status was not granted to just larala, but to an _____an called larala.

And, come to think of it.... Why have you got a resident Permit: OCIs do not have to register. <--- RUBBISH: he has a PIO card. Thanks nycank.

your passport number that is tied to PIO has the passport number on pio.
(1) Whenever this passport expires you can renew it, and should not the pio also
reflects the new passport number? when you mail the application for new pio.
Or (2) you can carry the pio along with the expired passport and new passport
to prove, you are PIO holder.
You keep mentioning resident permit, why this come into picture ?

OK..

My Passport tied to the PIO Card is expiring in March 2014

My Residential permit is expiring January 2014, that is why it keeps coming up, I was told by thte police that I have to renew my passport in order for them to extend the Residential permit. The residential permit says that you have to leave India on January 2014,, if it is not renewed, I guess I have to asurrender that residential permit, get out of India, and come back again and apply after six months for a new residential permit.

The PIO is not expired,, and not close to expire, and It is tied up to one passport, however, it has many spaces to attach new passport information

I found this information saying that change of nationality is permitted though, "In case there is a change in passport or nationality, the PIO card is required to be endorsed accordingly by the Consulate."

Then, has anybody endorsed the PIO card due to a new passport of a different nationality? It seems what I need to do to not have to go to Delhi and save the cost of the trip.

If nobody has endorsed the passport to a different nationality, have you endorsed to a new passport? what is the "normal" procedure. Is this something done and the Foreigner registration Office, or something that the Consulate that issued the PIO Card has to do?

PIO Cards

Eligibility criteria for PIO card is same as that of OCI card except that spouses who are not of Indian origin are also eligible. A comparison chart between OCI and PIO card holders may be seen at MHA website : http://mha.nic.in/pdfs/oci-chart.pdf. A PIO card holder can enter India without a visa during the validity of the card if carrying the card along with valid passport. In case there is a change in passport or nationality, the PIO card is required to be endorsed accordingly by the Consulate.

Looks like you have to leave India and give the resident permit up ? Why not give the PIO up and upgrade to OCI.
Seems to me getting OCI is much cleaner.
If not eligible to upgrade to OCI, you have to leave India and get the other passport that is expiring in 2019 tie to your PIO.
Why you cannot renew the passport (expiring 2014) through your consulate in India ?
It is messy, my friend.

A PIO has to be issued somewhere. Mine was issued by an FRRO. Once it is issued, I don't think it is at all relevant where it was issued, and any empowered authority, whether it is in or out of India, should be able to make any necessary changes.

laralar, it is interesting that the concept of change of nationality is there in the PIO-card stuff.

Don't know what nationalities are involved. For a Brit, renewing a passport here is likely to take months and months and months, and everything has to be done through an office in somewhere like Hong Kong! I certainly dread the day I have to do this! On the other hand, I might find it even harder in UK, with no address/residence/etc.

Nick-H,
sounds like UK commissioner in India does not do passport renewal, what a shame. They are sent to enjoy vacation in India.
