PIO and Registration to FRRO
Hi -
Thanks for reading this. I have moved and settled in India Dec. 2007 (A year ago). I and my wife has Indian Passport but my son who is 3 years old has US Citizenship. We have his PIO done and he is here on PIO. I have below question. 1) It seems there is rule like if stay is beyond 180 days, we need to register to FRRO. Is this rule still in force? 2) It's been already one year and we did not do any registration, what should we do now? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks. |

well, the rules on the Consulate sites are pretty clear that for stays over 180 days you have to register in the next 30.
I was late on an FRRO a few years back (though I was on an employment visa at the time) and there was a little huffing and puffing about being late along with an extra Rs. 3000 'fee' to get it completed. You might get some slack pleading ignorance with a child involved, but better to take care of it before it surfaces some other way and have to slug through the bureaucracy with some more issues,,, |

Yes, the rule is certainly still in force, and yes, you are in breach of it.
Go to the FRRO and grovel! The fact that you are both Indian citizens may well help a lot. It might also make it more, err... expensive. EDIT: Probably WRONG! see next post ![]() |

FRRO registration is not required for children under 16 years of age.

Good find. But is the PIO card a visa? Don't want to nitpick, but the Houston consulate website says: " A PIO Card holder shall not require a visa to visit India." suggesting that the PIO card is something other than a visa.
Personally, I'd attempt to register, and use the verbiage that you supplied as justification for not registering if needed... |

A PIO card is actually an exemption from needing a visa. |

That's great finding. Thank you.
Is this true for PIO as well? As the web site says.. "Children below 16 years of age do not require Registration, on any type of VISA." |

It is true that the PIO card is not a visa but FRRO seems to consider it a type of visa in their form. http://125.18.15.116/FRRO/RegFormw.jsp Last edited by ckforum : Dec 27th, 2008 at 00:48. |

Shoot, I think you are fine. We haven't registered our kids. I'm pretty sure we asked when I registered on my PIO. And we've had no problems traveling. Kids are fine.

While at FRO today in Pune asked them about requirment to register chidren. They told me it is required and showed me a register that showed people have applied for chidren's registration. When I told them that the website of ministry of home affairs and the disembarketion card specifically says that it is not required for chidren under 16 years of age, I was told that the rules have changed.
Later called the FRRO office in Mumbai and asked them about it. They told me that the minors are not required to register but they will register if asked for it. From other people's experiance and the official written information it is safe to conclude that the registration for chidren under 16 years of age is not required. |

I found this Bangalore one, so there are some online, but Indian bureaucracy being what it is you probably can't use it because it has the word "Bangalore" printed on it...

...yes. PIO card holder does not need to register if they are not going to stay more than 180 days.
