Passport Validity question for visa

A friend of mine from Singapore was looking forward to going to India; his travel companion, however, is Korean-American and has just found out that he only has 4 months' validity left on his passport.

Their trip is 2 weeks from now; but if his friend were to apply for a new American passport right now (he's currently in Seoul, Korea) it would take 3 weeks.

Question: Are they absolutely strict on the issue of passport validity, since I understand that they (and most countries) state that they req. 6 months' validity? He's not sure if he can get his visa approved if he applies now, and definitely can't get a new passport on time.

Your thoughts?

If your friend requests the American embassy to renew his passport within 2 days, then go personally to the indien embassy and tell them about your problem.....if possible the person who is in charge of the Visa department ..it would maybe help..
