This is an urban legend IMHO. I have yet to actually meet a person who has had their passport ripped off. Pan Am/LH/DL airlines in and out of BOM/DEL over the past three decades.
I have heard variations of this story-line in South America{GIG,EZE} too. |

Flying Aeroflot, when we landed up in Moscow they took all the passenger's passports and held them for the duration (24 hours one way, 48 the other way). They get angry at anyone who complains about this procedure.
Must be a joke there somewhere: "in Russia, they take passport. In Soviet Russia, they take you!" |
