Passport Advice Needed Please

if i apply in person at the british embassy in dheli or mumbai do i have to take my birth certificate as it is back in the uk and i don't really want to risk having it sent my post? my situation is that my british passport expires in june but my visa expires in march so when i fly home to apply for a new visa i will not have the required 6 months on my passport.

i need to get the passport before the visa so that i do not have to hang around in the uk for weeks(too expensive)waiting for a new one.

anyone know anything?

I think a proof of birth date might be required and since you don't your passport with you now, you don't have anything to prove it.

Your situation is a bit more complex, a British national might be able to help you better.

If you have your passport i don't think there should be any problems regarding the berth certificate.

Hi Lulu
Some thoughts;
1) I dont think you can replace your passport in India for the reasons quoted. The service is for lost, stolen or defaced items.
2) You could obviously create one of the above conditions, but this could open another can of worms in getting your current visa transferred to the new passport, in order to leave the country.
3) It is permitted for up to 9 months of your unexpired one to be transferred to the new one, so its not lost.
4) If you look at the fees chart in the link below, the costs are very similar for both approaches.
5) The premiums charged in the UK for same week/same day are not too extortionate, especially compared to dragging out your stay as mentioned.
6) the list on the l/h side on the link below will take you to any further answers you may need, I hope?

http://www.ips.gov.uk/passport/fees.asp

Hope this is of help
Johnny Five.

Sorry, just a few questions to get a clear picture of your situation.

Are you travelling home to the UK in (or before) March?
But your British passport expires in June?
And your worried that you won't be able to travel because your passport won't have six months left on it?

If you answered yes to all the above questions (I sound so formal ) then you have nothing to worry about. You only need six months left on your passport to travel to India.

EDITED TO ADD: Ahhh, sorry, I think I missed the point of your post. I see you want a new passport so you don't have to wait and get one in the UK. Sorry, I have no experience of renewing a passport while away. Sorry.

Lulu is basically on a visa run, as we will be in May. In and out as fast as possible.
Typical bloke, innit?

Actually, here's some information that may be of some use to you.

If you make an appointment for when you return to the UK, you can get a passport renewed the same day. And it only costs 42 pounds more; 114 pounds in total. That's a lot cheaper than having to wait for weeks.

Hope you're able to renew it in India, but if not, I hope this has been of help to you.

I am wrong and out-of-date!

My quoted restrictions were from experience many years back, before the communications/IT revolution took place.

Go here http://ukinindia.fco.gov.uk/en/passp...-your-passport and it will tell you all you need to know.
The fees are the same, though.
Regards
J5

Brits resident in India can get new passports through British missions here, it is part of the services provided. British travellers should not find themselves needing one, as their passports should have fulfilled the validity requirement when they got their visas.

Birth certificate lost in the post? Apply for a new one. Birth certificates are expendable and always replaceable. If yours is an old one, though, hand-written, you might have some attachment to that. The new one will be run off a computer.

A birth certificate is merely a certified copy of an entry in the register. The register is public, and when I last looked, anybody could apply for anybody else's certificate. That was a while back, though, and, with identity theft having become an issue, it might have been restricted. Of course, replacing it costs money and effort, so is not to be welcomed.

The use of birth certificate as any sort of proof of identity was something I could never understand.

Hey... I never read the original post properly

No, I do not think this service is available to tourists.

It seems you want to save time when you get back to the UK for your Visa purpose. I don't think it takes that much time getting a new passport, probably a two week or so. As you are applying for a renewal, not many documents may be required apart from your old passport. You can in fact start the renewal process with passport agency using their online forms
