In UK they are available to members of the tourism trade who can show a reason to make regular and frequent trips to India.

I'm pretty sure I read that on the London HCI site.

They are issuing 1-year tourist visas also to be people who, due to having some sort of property interest in India, were previously given X-visas. Check out the Goa propery threads in the property forum.

They don't give them to people just because they want a longer holiday

Then please ask her about her application, what it was based on, and how she got what she got --- and report back to us.

That is it though. She said they applied for 1 yr x and got offered 1 yr tourist for an extra £20 per person. I was then told the impression was they will issue on request to people but people don't request as it is not advertised.

Anyway we will see. I have an 8 month travel plan and if I can I want to avoid a visa run just an exit/entry will do!

Well... Asking can do no harm! Do tell us if you get one!

There is a one-year visa thing in roll-out to a limited list of European and some other countries. The confusion just now seems to be that some embassies know about it other don't.

However --- UK was not on that list of countries

AND, more importantly, although the visa is for a whole year the per-visit stay is reduced to 90 days.

I heard this person applied for a 1 year x visa so they offered her a 1 year toursit visa. A one year is given if requested as they have the authority to do so. So I hear anyway! Just wanted to know if anyone has experience this.
the question is: is your friend american? or from a country where one year visas are granted as a matter of routine? if not, then there is hope for all of us!

what if one has a one year business visa - is one still required to leave the country after 6 months and then return? or can one stay for a whole year in india without having to set foot in sri lanka or wherever?

I think that one can stay, on a business visa, for the duration of the visa.

I've never known just what they mean by the 1-yr vis for tourist trade --- but I suspect that they may cover people who go as tour guides.

Most [good] overseas agents will also spend time visiting and evaluating the hotels and services they sell to their customers. Whilst this is surely business, I wonder if they get the 1-yr tourist visa?

Thinking out loud here --- I don't know! And it's a while since I've been a customer of a UK tour company so don't have anyone to ask.

I think that's the case for an employment visa. I believe a business visa, which is a different category, also requires departure at least every 6 months.

I thought it was a five year visa for some countries (not the UK) that was in the works?

I don't know, dzibead... could be. But I'm sure I read a recent post about Schengen countries now (or as they catch up) giving one-year/90-day-stay visas.

It gets more confusing day by day!

I don't think there is necessarily a stay limit on a business visa (But they can always apply their rubber stamp to anything, if they want!) but I think it is normally issued for months (ie to do a deal, rather than work) rather than long term.

Don't know.

There has been a recent change as far as business visas are concerned and now you have to leave India after 6 months.
