The documents are listed on the OCI page of the HCI website. ______________________________ ______________________________ _________________

OCI is a service that many of us are so grateful for. You are welcome not to surrender your indian passport, and keep applying for a tourist visa when you want to visit desh. yatri09
Did you send your surrender application by post? Have you received the surrender certificate from HCI london?
A friend of mine sent the application over two months ago and still no reply yet. They dont answer the phone/email or even postal communication with prepaid envelope. Really strange...

I submitted my OCI application on 31st march 2010 in HCL via personal visit. The current status is under process and not printed. As per their site they say it would take maxium 3 months and they can attend any query related to oci after 3 month only. I still have to wait for another month for hoping to get some result. I thougt it should be done very fast but i was wrong and still waiting for the outcomes. Now a days they dont receive any application personally if you dont provide surrender certificate. so surrender certificate is must or mandatory for applying for OCI.

Thats not the case in Birmingham as you can surrender a passport and apply for OCI at the same time. The person at the desk will just note down the receipt number for your surrender on the OCI form.

Thanks shere that's helpful to know.I wonder whether that is only for people who are following the rules and surrendering their passport immediately after acquiring another citizenship, and applying for OCI at the same time, or whether that can that be done by someone who has illegally kept their Indian passport for some time?

My wife kept her Indian passport but had been to the consulate to get in cancelled a few years back. So when whe made her OCI app she surrendered at the same time.
They never used to require you to surrender, but just used to cancel the passport and hand it straight back to you.
About a decade back my father whos Indian passport had long passed its expiry date went to give it in and they laughed at him and said why was he bothering. In the end he insisted they do something with it and so they endorsed one page and cut the corners. He has since got his OCI (a few years before this surrendering thing was introduced). So he has his old Indian passport and OCI.
