Having said that, I very much doubt that the visa authorities could be persuaded to view going to live in a temple as "volunteering", even if the intention is that good works are to be done during that time.
The latest information from VFS Birmingham is that globally 'X' visas are only available for PIO's** (I don't know about spouses of PIO's but I would guess they'd get one. I don't know about spouses of Employment visa holderss - there were some there in B'ham - perhaps someone knows?)

** who don't need them 'cos they can get PIO cards, but there you are!

Whoever you spoke to at VFS Birmingham was talking bollocks. I rather suspect that you were persistent about wanting a five year entry visa and they just told you whatever it took to make you understand that you almost certainly wouldn't get a 5-10 years entry visa, and to make you go away.

Long term entry visas (5 years) are usually only given to people of Indian origins (note the difference between people of Indian origins and those people with actual PIO status) but shorter term entry visas are definitely given to British people for other reasons. VFS's own website even gives examples such as a spouse or parent having an employment visa, volunteering, short term courses and unpaid internships.
