New OCI application in UK

Send in all my documents and the postal order for £165, 2 weeks ago. When i enter the application number on the OCI enquiry form there is no response. says the application has not been acknowledged yet. How long after application sent in does it appear on the OCI enquiry form?. How will i know if the application has even reached the High Commission in London.

A Fed-EX or DHL like service ? Or a registered postal service with ack. receipt ?

Presumably you did use special delivery for something as valuable as a passport?

In which case, take a look at the receipt the Post Office gave you, there's a web address and tracking number there, so you can check that it was delivered safely.

About week to 10 days between dispatch from New Delhi to reaching the mission/Consulate.

I think that's actually a bit quicker than they quote on the website, which is pretty good news.

Well done on never needing an Indian visa again, EVER!

For OCI, one does not have to mail in the passport(UK or whichever country) with the application. Only the true copies of the passport's front page and important pages. For PIO, I understand that passports have to be sent with the application.

Just a clarification of the process after sending in the application. This bit is not explianed in an otherwise excellent website.

1) when you submit part of application online you are given a unique ref no. This is your lifeline.

2) after posting the application go to the OCI online enquiry form.

Type in your unique ref and eventually some of the boxes online will start getting filled as the application progresses...ie: date of receipt in London, then a file number, then photos scanned, then a 8 week wait and then granted appears on the status.

3) this may imply to you that you now have to send the passsport to the HC. No wait for the other boxes to get filled. ie: Documents printed in delhi, Documents despatched from Delhi and finally Document received in London.

4) at this time you get a scrolling message to say...contact your local mission. thats when you send the passports.

So my passport is at London, the docs have been despatched from delhi and recd at London. Now all i am waiting for is for it to be returned to me.

Hope this is useful to others.

Update

Passport with lifelong visa stamped arrived today. Blue certificate of registration (looks like a passport with photo and just one page in it) arrived. No plastic green card type card as was hinted at in the past. From date of sending application 12 July 2009 to receipt of stamped passport was about 8 weeks. Great service. And theres been a postal strike in the Uk for the last 10 days.

Sounds like the have improved things. I remember when my dad applied for this a few years back. Took about 6 months to complete.

So I take it from your write up there is no need to visit the Consulate to take an oath of allegiance etc

yeah atlast someone somewhere has realised that the oaths of allegiance is pure bunkum.

i had to do one for the queen decades ago when i was naturalised....boy did i mean it.

would have been strange if i had to now take an oath of allegiance to India.

How life changes..

25 years ago i was overjoyed to be naturalised and hold my first British passport.

Now i am overjoyed at having my OCI card. Same feeling of euphoria.
