Need help - PIO timelines / suggestion (DC embassy)

Hi folks,

I'm in need of advice on if I have sufficient time to get PIO (Wash DC embassy) for upcoming India trip.
- We plan taking off for India visit on November 5th
- My son (1yr old, US citizen) needs either PIO or India visa for the visit

Question is whether I should be applying for PIO for my son now... I can go in person to DC embassy and apply for my son's PIO but I'm not sure if we have sufficient time for PIO... embassy lists 45 business days but I see folks talking abt ~1 month or less. Also any idea on how to handle situation if PIO doesn't come in time. Appreciate some quick helpful guidance....

Thanks.
Venkatesh.

There seems to be quite a bit of variation in processing times -- though mine took 4 weeks in Houston last year, exactly what they stated it would. Since you have the option of visiting the embassy in person, you might just ask someone there how 'real' that 45-day turnaround time is.

The problem is that "Any enquiry regarding PIO card will be entertained only after 45 business days of receipt of completed application form in the embassy", so once you submit the docs you're left crossing your fingers and waiting.

Since you don't have to submit the original passport, I suppose you could, if the PIO doesn't arrive, apply for a tourist visa at the last minute since Travisa offers same-day processing:

There's an emergency visa service here:

kgvenkatesh - I live close to the DC embassy, and in my experience it took 2 weeks when we applied in person for hubby's PIO & 3 weeks when we applied by mail for the children's PIO. I could have the timings mixed up but at any rate, both routes took less than the "official" time line.

LBBT - rules for OCI are a bit stringent in regards to foreign-born children so if OP and his spouse are Indian citizens, his son can only get PIO, not OCI.

Under the age of 16. An adult can apply for OCI even if parents are Indian citizen.

Right, as the OP said his child is 1 yr old so he cannot get OCI. I wasn't saying anything about adults
