my ticket is for 4 months

ciao all, greetings from italy.

i have overstayed my 90 days in schengen and will soon be leaving for india from italy. i am a us citizen and have found that the indian embassy in rome will only grant me a 90 day visa. they could care less about my overstay... their concern is india not italy, i suppose if i will find that my overstay is a problem it will be when i try and reenter schengen. anyway.... here in italy they only want to issue 90 days out of the rome embassy and it begins on the day they issue it not when u arrive in india.

i will show them my 4 month round trip ticket and hope they will grant more days ,,, but i doubt it??? in which case i suppose theat i will have to find an embassy in india to extend my visa.

however,,, have i now read on this forum thati will have to actually leave india and then come back in? i am a bit confused . and what of just overstaying in india without a visa. anybody ever do that?

thanks for any imfo---------- bc

Why not just travel within the parameters of the visas that you have been granted, as most people do? What makes you think you are exempt?

Can you imagine what would happen if an Indian or European deliberately overstayed their visa in the USA?

You will have severe problems if you overstay your Indian visa.

Any hotel you try to book into after your visa expiry date will report you to the police. This will be the least of your problems.

Try visiting the charming and exotic Nepal. You will be able to secure another visa there in Kathmandu.

If they have decided that they are only issuing 90 day visas, then you are unlikely to change their minds unless you have a really good reason (booked tickets are not considered a good reason by any embassy I've ever dealt with, unfortunately). Also the visa starting from the day it is issued is the same with all indian visas.

You cannot extend your visa. You will have to leave the country and get a new visa issued in Nepal, Sri Lanka, or other nearby country.

As everyone else has said, it probably isnt a great idea to deliberately overstay your visa in India, or anywhere!

obtaining a new visa after 90 days

dear all, thank u for the imfo.

please do not misconstrue my messages as some attempt to advocate breaking the law. as i understand it this crime has penalty of not only being exiled if caught , but also a banning from the country in the future for a set time..which is based on the length of ones overstay. for example a five year bann for an over stay of up to 2 years.
if one satys at a hotel in schengen europe. the hotel owner gives your passport number to the local police , in that way you are recorded. perhaps it is the same in india.

so, as i understand it. please correct me if i am wrong. .. if one wants to extend ones tourist visa more then 3 months-90 days ..then reporting to an embassy within india will not work.. but rather one has to leave the country and then reenter.

could some folks please address the process. do u have to do to find an indian emabssy on the other side of the border... or simply walk through an immigration station-- (again assuming that one has only an expiring 90 day visa-) and what are the costs involved?

thanks.

You have to go to an Indian consulate in another country -- like Kathmandu in Nepal. Apply for a new visa. Cost is probably the same as it is in US except that they may wire your local Indian consulate (San Francisco, if you are Hawaiian) to make sure that you are okay for a visa. All this will take approximately 5-6 working days, so you'll be there about a week before getting your visa.

Good luck...

90 days only.??????????:(

dear wonderwoman and anyone,

i am going to india to study music. specifically bansuri.

the study will be ,more traditionally private rather then from a school-

do u think that there might be a way to get a longer visa

by requesting a student visa rather then a tourist visa?

thanks, bc

You can get a student visa if you are studying at a government-approved college or institution.

If your teacher is teach at, or affiliated with, such a place, you should have no problem. Of course, you will need to have all the paperwork showing that you are accepted for course of study, which you must submit with your student visa application. Your teacher should be able to help with this, especially if they have taught foreign students before.

So far as the basics are concerned, getting new visa outside India, leaving India and returning after limited stay on longer-term visa, etc etc --- please read and browse this forum. All the information is there, there is no need to ask again.
