Unhappy More 10 Year Visa Questions

Hi,
I am in the USA with an American passport. Have been to India several times, but most of my visas are now on the expired passport. I have heard that in San Franscisco it is quite easy to get the 10 year visa. I understand that it is good for 6 months at a time for the 10 years. My question is how does that work. If they do issue me the 10 year visa does that mean by 6 months start from whenever I set foot in India? So if I applied now for the 10 year and got it but didn't go to India until say November that's when my visa would start? Opposed to the 6 month visa that comes back with a date? Has anyone gotten the 10 year visa by post to the San Fran. consulate? Would it be better to try for it in person? I used to live in NYC so it was never a problem to just go to the Indian consulate the day before I left but now being in Las Vegas it's not quite as easy. I did try to get the 10 year visa in NYC once and they said "We don't issue that here". But I have heard some sucess stories about San Fransciso. Do you think if I just popped a cashiers check for the 10 year amount with the paper work I'll get one? I would appreicate any advise on this, it sure would make life easier to have the 10 year!
Thanks!

Hi Ganesa1008,

Your ten year visa would start on the day they issue it. The 180 days period would start from the day that you entered into India.
San Fran should be no problem to get a ten year visa, best bet is to call them and tell them that is what you are looking for so they are clear on it. Make sure and inform them that you have been to India a few times before.
For some reason I sometimes here that ten years visa's are not issued for a first time visitor (on occasion).

(415) 668-0662 is the number to their office.

I received my ten year visa from the New York office and had no problems, all I did was just ask.
